This ABC book of the Human Body is dedicated to my VPK students (Class of 2017) at Bear's Den Childcare Center. I want to thank them for being such a great class and cooperating in/with my many college assignments over the past two years!

ABCs of:
The Human Body
Written and Illustrated by:
Mackenzie Vaughn

is for Abdomen
The Abdomen is the belly area on your body that holds important organs inside such as stomach and intestines.

is for Bones
Adults have 206 bones in their bodies. Babies are born with more but a few bones fuse together as they grow and then there are less.

is for Cell
Cells are the smallest parts of the human body with over 100 trillion of them.

is for Digestion

Our digestive system is what breaks down the foods and liquids we eat and drink. This system including the stomach, esophagus, intestines, colon, rectum, and anus take nutrients from our food to use for fuel.

is for Eyes

Our eyes help us see things and send a signal to our brain of what it is. The colored part of the eye is called the Iris and it is a muscle.

is for Feet

Our feet have about 1/4 of the bones in our body. They also have more than 250,000 sweat glands that can produce as much sweat as a mini water bottle in a day (half pint).

is for Gums

Gums are the pink flesh around our teeth. Our gums hold our teeth in so it is important we floss to prevent cavities and other problems.

is for Heart

Our heart beats about 2.5 billion times in the a lifetime. The heart cleans and pumps blood throughout our bodies.

is for Immune System

Our immune system is like an army of cells that kills germs and bacteria that enter our bodies and make us sick. We can help our immune system by eating fruits and vegetables.

is for Jaw

Our jaw is a bone that moves up and down allowing us to open and close our mouths. We use our jaw to bite and chew our food to break it down for our stomachs.
is for Kidneys

We have two kidneys, but only need one to survive. Our kidneys help clean our blood, absorb minerals from food/drink, and produce hormones and urine.

is for Lungs

Our lungs help us get the oxygen we need to breath from the air. They are some of the hardest working organs in our body pumping about 20 times in a minute.

is for Muscles

Our muscles protect our bones/organs and help us move. We have 600 muscles and the tongue is the strongest.

is for Nose

We use our nose to breath the air around us and for smelling. The hairs in our nose filter the air we breath so bad things do not enter our body, especially bugs.

is for Organs

We have a total of 78 organs in our body that work together to keep us alive and healthy. Our major organs are the heart, brain, lungs, kidneys, and liver.

is for Phalanges (fingers/toes)

Phalanges are the bones in our fingers and toes. We have a total of 10 finger phalanges and 10 toe phalanges.
is for question

When you have a question about your body you should see a doctor. There are doctors for all areas of the body such as a dentist for your teeth or dermatologist for your skin.

is for Ribs

The ribcage protects our vital organs and moves slightly when we breath in and out. We have 24 ribs (12 pairs).
