Once upon a time, "Santiago Nasar got up at five-thirty in the morning" (Garcia Marquez 3) to get ready for school. As he got up, he fixed his bed and ran down the stairs. He was so excited for his first day as a 3rd grader and to meet new classmates.

As Santiago entered the kitchen he asked about the weather and "Victoria Guzman, the cook, was sure it hadn't rained that day, or the whole month of February" (Garcia Marquez 8). Santiago finished eating and walked to his stop to wait for the bus.

Once Santiago arrived to school, he met new friends and participated in the many activities throughout the day. His teacher observed him throughout the day and said to his parents "People like him a lot [...] because he's honest and has a good heart"(Garcia Marquez 27).

The next day, a guest speaker who "arrived wearing a short jacket and very tight trousers, both of natural calfskin, and kid gloves of the same color" (Garcia Marquez 25) came to the classroom and talked to the kids about being honest and standing up for other people.

Once the speaker left, it was time for arts and crafts. During this time the children learned how to "make artificial flowers and fancy candy" (Garcia Marquez 31) out of tissue paper. Santiago enjoyed this activity and was amazed at a particular flower.

After arts and crafts, it was time to take a nap. The children helped each other set up their beds and before they knew it, they had "fallen into deep sleep" (Garcia Marquez 45) a few minutes later after placing their crafts underneath the beds.

An hour later, the children had suddenly awakened to the sound of a girl crying. She was crying because someone had stolen the flower that she had just made. When the teacher asked her if she knew who took it, she said it was "Santiago Nasar" (Garcia Marquez 47).

"Twenty-two people declared they had heard everything said" (Garcia Marquez 51) and knew who stole the flower, but they didn't dare to tell the teacher. As a result the teacher told Santiago to go sit at the timeout table.
