Astro 297A

Henry the Owl was a curious owl. He loved asking questions.

One day, as he was performing his nighttime routine, Henry the Owl caught sight of the gorgeous, glowing, circular Moon. He was mesmerized.

Beautiful...
Henry the Owl was so awestruck that he flew all night to magical Moon, dancing and twirling in its beautiful moonlight. He wished he could touch the Moon, even if only for a second. He had never seen something so beautiful.

But alas, his wings grew tired and the Sun began to rise and Henry the Owl found himself dozing in a comfy branch, dreaming of the Moon. He couldn't wait to dance with the Moon again the next night.

Henry the Owl had a wonderful time dancing with the Moon the following night. However, he couldn't help but notice that the Moon was not as full as it was the night before.

Hmmm...

He became worried. "Will the Moon ever be as full and beautiful as it was the first time I danced with it?", Henry the Owl wondered. He then thought aloud, "How long will it take for the Moon to complete its full cycle and go back to its full self?".

In order to answer this question, Henry the Owl decided to mark a tick on his tree branch every night until the Moon became full again.

Each night Henry the Owl marked a tick in his tree, he noticed the Moon grew smaller and smaller. One night, he was distraught to find there was no Moon at all. Henry the Owl became deeply saddened and worried. He searched all night for the Moon, but had no success. Henry the Owl was heartbroken.

To Henry the Owl's startling delight, he discovered a thin, shining, crescent in the sky the following night! His hope returned, and he continued marking ticks in his tree branch.

Henry the Owl couldn't contain his happiness. His smile grew wider and wider each and every night, as he noticed the Moon became fuller...

Yippee!!!!!
And fuller...

And fuller...

Until finally, the night came when the Moon became its beautiful, glowing self again! Henry the Owl twirled and "hoo'ed" with happiness. He had been so patient waiting for this night to arrive.

I am so happy!!!
Henry the Owl looked at his tree branch to see how many ticks he had marked. He was shocked to find that he had waited 30 days for the Moon to complete its cycle. "That's almost a month!," he thought aloud. He was incredibly proud of himself for being so patient.

He wondered why it took so long for the Moon to complete its cycle. Since he was a curious owl, he flew to the library to do some research. He quickly found a book about the Moon and began reading. After a few minutes, he learned the reason the Moon takes 30 days to complete its cycle. He wanted to share his knowledge with everyone!

On his way home, he flew into his friend, Harold the Owl. He stopped Harold the Owl in the air and began sharing his new findings.
Harold the Owl! Did you know the moon takes 30 days to complete its cycle because that's how long it takes to go around the Earth?!

No way! That's so cool! Thanks for sharing Henry the Owl!
