It was like any other day in John's house: peaceful, quiet and uneventful. John was very bored in the living room with nothing to do.He was an only child. Plus, his parents had banned him from watching TV and playing computer games at home as they thought those activities were addictive and reading was not his cup of tea.

It was a same old day, until he heard a familiar voice.
"John, go outside immediately! We are leaving!"
"Leaving for where, mum?"
"No time for questions, the car is leaving!"
John took off towards the door immediately, and from the window he could see a familiar golden car.
On the car, John could barely contain his excitement. He was going to visit his aunt's mansion again on that day!And he had nearly forgotten about it! She lived in a lavish mansion which looked old on the outside but new and pretty in the inside. He could still remember the large playstations and game consoles from last year that his parents would allow him to play as that day was special to him and them.

The mansion sat on a high hill overlooking the shiny coast of England. It was a house John had asked her mother to buy many times before, but his mother explained that the mansion had caused almost a million dollars and she could barely afford that.
John stood before the big wooden door of that majestic house and admired how beautifully painted it was. Going in the house was like a dream come true.
Once he was in the house, he found out that the house had a coat of new paint and it looked different from what he could remember last year. There were many new rooms and many colourful paintings on the wall, some of which looked strange. He also found out that the living room of the house was filled with old but priceless glass tables and armchairs. John felt like he was in a luxurious 5-star hotel.
John had an exciting day in the mansion and at night he was very tired after that different day, not the same as his meaningless and boring daily life. He went out like a bulb and drifted away to sleep.
Halfway through the night, John woke up with a sudden shock. He saw that there was a heavy storm raging outside the mansion and that growling sound he heard definitely had nothing to do with it.
He started shivering as he could not figure out what was the source of the noise. His imagination went wild. What was that sound? Was it a monster? Was there a ghost? He tried to sleep peacefully, but he found out he could not. His only choice was to find out what was it.
As his did not want his parents to see him, he crept out of the room and tried not to make a sound. He slept in a guest room that night with his father, so John did not want to wake him up as he was sleeping. He crept through the corridoors, hoping that he was wrong.
The immensely dark corridoor made the scene look like a horror movie. John went past lots of rooms with people snoring in it. His ears were like an elephant's as he tried to detect where the growling sound came from. It was difficult to do so as the sound of the storm mixed and snoring mixed with the sound of the growling. He went down the stairs to the living room and soon was about to give up and go back to sleep when he heard the sound again, louder than before.
He went trough an old door in a corner of the living room, which made an ear-piercing creaking sound that increased his chances of being caught wandering around the house only two hours after midnight. There was a flight of stairs that took him down to an ajar door. He pushed trough the half-open door and into a basement filled with boxes and crates. He took his time in inspecting the boxes, trying to find whatever that made the growling.
He found lots of things in the boxes, but none of them made growling sounds. The room smelled strongly of alcohol and John wondered if someone drunk lived in the mansion before. His heart palpitated in his chest as he moved closer to the source of the sound, desperately hoping there was no monster in the mansion. His view of the mansion had changed since he first heard the muffled growling in bed.
John soon discovered that there was a half-hidden door behind a crate of root beer. The door was very heavy and it took him donkey's years to open the door. It turned out that it had been blocked by a heap of bones and skulls. John gulped as he thought of how frightening the place was. He wanted to go back to sleep but he got the funny feeling that it was not safe to do so.
The door led him to a passageway that looked like one you would find in a castle. It was filled with spooky paintings of graveyards and skeletons that seemed to be always staring at the person who looks at them. The place looked gravely and dark, only dimly lit by a few torches placed at distant intervals.
He went past lots of windows overlooking the mountain, but were mostly blocked by small grey pebbles which could have been washed down by the rain. John thought about what was the purpose of building this basement. Was it for a movie? Was it built by people long ago?And he wondered what was in this straight passageway that made the growls which made his heart skip a beat every few seconds? He felt cold sweat running down his face as he took steps nearer to the unknown noise.
