Hey Jane! I am having a bit of trouble in my computer homework. Will you help me ?

Sure! Let's begin. It is pretty easy once you understand it.
At Jack's house..

What is a computer network?
A computer network is a set of computers connected for sharing data or information. There are many types of networks.
Can you tell me some of them?
LAN, or a local area network connects small areas like a building or a society. It is locally managed. It mostly uses Ethernet or WI-FI as means of communication
WAN, or a wide area network connects very large areas like a country or the whole world. the governments and large companies use WAN. It is mostly wireless.
MAN, or a metropolitan area network, connects an area smaller than WAN, but larger than LAN.
Example - A city.
PAN, or a personal area network, is used to communicate between personal devices where one device acts as a router.
WLAN, or wireless area network is a wireless network, mostly using radio waves to connect small areas and transmit data.

Who are clients? What are servers?
Clients are the users that receive information or data from servers. They are small computers, but servers are fast and reliable computers that provide information to the clients.

This is packet switching. The sender splits the message in packets and delivers them separately. they are then assembled back in the correct order at their destination.

So what is the work of a router?
A router is one of the networking devices. it is used to send, receive or forward packets. Routers are mostly hardware devices, but there are some software routers too!
