The Basics of the Atom
Before we start on Niobium, we need to talk about the
atom first. There are three particles in the atom: electrons,
neutrons, and protons. Inside the Nucleus has the protons
and neutrons outside the nucleus is the electrons inside the
electron cloud. The electrons aren't always the same
distance to the nucleus because there are different levels
of the electron cloud. The particles that are mainly involved
in chemical reactions are valence electrons. Nuclear
reactions may release a large amount of energy. Not all
atoms have the same amount of protons. In fact there is a
table that separates the elements based on there amount
of protons or the atomic number. This table is called the
periodic table. The way you find the amount of protons,
electrons and neutron is, to find the Protons and electrons
look at the atomic number, the number is the same
amount of protons and electrons. The neutrons is the
atomic number- atomic mass.

Niobium
Now that we know the basics of an Atom we get to
learning about our element Niobium. So first off
the Atomic number is 41, The Atomic mass is 93.
Next the symbol is Nb. The person who discovered
it was someone by the name of Charles Hatchet in
1801. This element looks white and is a solid.
Common uses for this element is in Alloy like for
missiles and space equipment. Also it can be used
for MRI magnets. Health effects can be, Inhaling
the Niobium dust can cause poison. There aren't
any environmental effects known.

Compounds of Niobium
One compound of Niobium is Niobium Oxide
which has the formula of NB0 it is a super
conductor. Another Compound of Niobium is
Niobium Dioxide, NbO2 this is used for a
powerful reducing agent. It changes carbon
monoxide to just carbon. It changes Sulfur-
Dioxide to just Sulfur. Those are both
compound of Niobium.

Glossary
Nucleus: /ˈn(y)o͞oklēəs/, The positively charged
central core of an atom, containing most of its
mass.
Protons:/ˈprōˌtän/,A stable subatomic particle
occurring in all atomic nuclei, with a positive
electric charge equal in magnitude to that of
an electron.
Neutron: /ˈn(y)o͞oträn/, A subatomic particle of
about the same mass as a proton but without
an electric charge, present in all atomic nuclei
except those of ordinary hydrogen.

Electrons: /iˈlekˌträn/ A subatomic particle with
a charge of negative electricity, found in all
atoms and acting as the primary carrier of
electricity in solids.
Electron Cloud:The region of negative charge
surrounding an atomic nucleus.
Valence Electrons: electrons of an atom that
can participate in the formation of chemical
bonds with other atoms.
Atom:a basic unit of matter.
Atomic Number: the number of protons found
in the nucleus of an atom.

Atomic Mass: total mass of protons, neutrons
and electrons in a single atom.
Symbol: The symbol that the element is
referred to.
