Why I took This Class:
I took this class to get a new perspective on children’s literature, learn about books I should include in my class room, familiarize myself with stories I wouldn't normally choose, and learn how to get children interested in learning. I hope to use the knowledge from this class to share my love of reading with my students.
My life as a reader:
I have loved reading and listening to stories ever since I was little. I fondly reflect on the times that my parents would read to me and my siblings before bed, being excited to read to my parents when I learned how, and spending hours finishing a book I couldn't put down. When I participated in Battle of the Books in elementary school, I was usually the child who read most of the stories. Sadly, I don't have as much time to leisurely read as I used to, so the fun in reading has decreased as I find myself studying textbook after textbook. Once all my required reading is finished, I rarely spend my free time reading something enjoyable.
My Favorite Current Book:
My current favorite book is The Count of Monte Christo by Alexandre Dumas. I read this novel during the last half of summer and couldn't put it down. The main character- Edmund Dantes- is and intricate character who was betrayed by his "friends" and put in jail so that they could benefit from his misfortune. Naturally, Edmund escapes jail, finds the treasure of Monte Christo, and adopts the name, the Count of Monte Christo. He then dedicates his life to seeking revenge on those who
wronged him. What I love about this story is how well Edmond plans his revenge. Rather than directly causing issues, he sets up everyone to cause their own downfall. Dumas had created and ingenious masterpiece.

My Favorite Childhood Book:
In Elementary school, I loved reading Gail Carson Levine. This is the author of Ella Enchanted, The Two Sisters of Bamarre, and Fairest. I first received Fairest as a gift from my aunt and then looked for other books by that author.
However, another favorite series of mine was The Magic Tree House series. My mother would read these to us before bed. But as I learned to read, I would read them independently. I loved the sense of adventure from these books!

My Favorite Children's Author:
My favorite childhood author would have to be Mary Pope Osborne because of my love for The Magic Tree House books. She provided and entertaining way to learn about history, and her books were the first chapter books that I read by myself. I think that Osborne's books are a great introduction for young readers because they aren't too challenging, they have a lot of action, and they aren't too long. I never read her book outside of her The Magic Tree House though.
