Once upon a time, there was an 8 year old boy named Alex. Alex was a very smart, fun, and outgoing child. However at a young age, Alex's parents realized that he wasn't like other children his age. He liked to play with his sisters dolls, play tea, and most of all, he loved playing dress up with his sisters dress up clothes.

Alex came from a very supportive American family that was very understanding, however even so they hoped he would someday soon outgrow this stage he was going through. Shortly after, Alex's family realized this wasn't just a stage and this was who was and will always be. Alex's parents decided it was best to sit their entire family and closest friends and tell them that Alex was a transgender.

Alex's family wanted people to know that even though being a transgender isn't socially acceptable that it's ok in their family and that Alex should be treated no differently, and like everyone else. Although Alex's family became comfortable with his new identity, Alex was still struggling with coming to terms with his new identity of being transgender. He wore dress and paint his nails, but didn't want to be judged.

A major issue that Alex struggled with in school was the bathrooms. Normally boys use the urinals, however Alex started out using the stalls where he would sit down on the toilet. Eventually be became comfortable enough to use the girls bathroom since this was what he identified with. Alex felt judged because girls would look at his funny, make noises and nasty comments and make him feel like he was doing something wrong.

Alex got called down to the office for complaints about his entry into the girls bathroom. It was a really big deal and Alex wasn't allowed to use the girls bathroom until his family threatened to sue the school district for discrimination. They advised the school on their child's rights, and never had any issues with administration again.

Although this was settled, Alex still had to deal with the stares and rudeness from the rest of the kids who didn't understand his new identity. Alex sat down with his friends and explained to them that this was who he was now and that if they didn't want to accept him that was their decision but he wasn't gonna change for anyone.



Alex's family sat him down and explained to him that American culture isn't generally supportive of transgenders. They told him they are biases but to always stay true to himself and never give on himslef or what he believes in. This talk was just what Alex needed to make him more comfortable with this new identity.

The very next day, Alex wore a dress to school with painted nails and dressy shoes. He got tons of stares, but at this point, he didn't care, because he was comfortable in his own skin. He didn't care about what the normal culture thought because he decided it didn't matter to him. Alex was confident in his skin, but sad because he had no one who could relate to what he's going through.

About two weeks later, the most unexpected and unbelievable thing happened to Alex. A new girl named Asa transferred to Alex's school. Alex was his usual self and was the only one who befriended her. His kindness ended up being the begigining of a new exciting chapter in Alex's life, because it turned out Asa was transgender as well. She was a girl who identified as a boy.

Alex was so happy that he found someone that he could now share his journey and that could relate to him. He explained to Asa what his family explained to her about being judged and how to deal with it. He really helped her get through the tough times with lots of encouragement and support. Asa was so grateful to have a like Alex. They were inseparable to say the least. Asa and Alex decided to start a club in their school for transgender children so other children would understand that it's ok to be different and that you shouldn't feel bad about not being like everyone else.
