Chapter 1:
Bullying
Bullying: Bullying is a repeated action used through a power imbalance to hurt someone either physically or emotionally.
People bully for many different reasons. People can bully to take out their own deeply set personal issues on other people, they can bully because it gets them social recognition, or people can bully if they just don't have a loving family life. The list really goes on and on, there are many psychological factors that might cause someone to bully.
For the victim, bullying is a very serious issue, and can cause many deep psychological problems for the victim including; Depression, Anxiety, sadness, loneliness, a decrease in academic achievement, and loss of enjoyment in activities they would usually enjoy.
There are three main types of bullying. These are Verbal bullying, social bullying, and physical bullying. Verbal bullying is when you would say or write mean things to other people. Social bullying would be things like intentionally excluding someone from a group of people, and physical bullying is the actual act of physically hurting someone or their property.
Chapter 2:
Cyber Bullying
Cyber Bullying: Unlike regular bullying, cyber bullying is an aggressive act performed by a group or individual using electronic forms of harassment against a victim that can not protect themselves. Cyber bullying is carried out online, whereas regular bullying carried out in person.
To protect yourself against cyber bullying you can always; keep a close eye on what you post, keep your passwords secret, and tell a trusted adult about what is happening.
Through my personal experience, cyber bullying is a much easier form of bullying to prove to other people than real face to face bullying. When it comes to cyber bullying you can always prove to an adult that the things happening to you are actually taking place.
However, cyber bullying is hard to notice. Many students don't want their parents to see what they post on social media so they don't let them know they are being bullied, thus their situation goes overlooked and only gets worse.
Chapter 3:
Dating Guidelines
Dating Guidelines:
When dating it is important to have a set of guidelines. You should have these guidelines in order to protect you, and your partner from having an unsatisfying relationship.
Five Characteristics of a Healthy Relationship:
-Respect
-Trust and support
-Shared responsibility
-Negotiation and fairness
-Honesty and accountability
Five Characteristics of an Unhealthy relationship:
-Using emotional abuse
-Using intimidation
-Using economic abuse
-Using isolation
-Using family and loved ones
Conflict resolution is to come to a peaceful conclusion that settles both sides of a conflict that may be present in a relationship. This helps diffuse any situation that could be detrimental and possibly damage your relationship or end it all together.
Chapter 4:
Dating Violence
Dating Violence:
Dating Violence is hostile, destructive, and abusive behavior found in a romantic relationship. Three types of dating violence are verbal/emotional, physical, and sexual.
Dating Violence is very destructive not only to the relationship, but the mental state of the victim of this violence. The victim of this violence may feel sad and depressed, like it is their fault they are being abused, or they might feel anxious or afraid that it will get worse.
Cycle of Violence
Indecent - any type of abuse occurs
Tension Building - abuser gets angry, break down of communication, and victim begins to get nervous
Making Up - Abuser will apologize, and promise for it to never happen again
Calm - Abuser will act like nothing ever happened, and the victim will hope that it is over.
Chapter 5:
Sexting
Sexting:
Sexting is the act of sending someone sexually explicit photos or messages. People usually use sexting to enhance their relationship, or to pleasure the other person.
Consequences of Sexting:
Sexting can get you not only into trouble with your parents if they find out, but if you are under the age of consent and send a photo you can also be in legal trouble. It is also dangerous because if you sext, you have no idea who the photo or messages could end up with.
Although I don't have any personal experience with this topic, I feel that sexting is a very scary thing that people do, and the risk is much much higher than the reward. You never know who will see what you send whether it be online or through text.
