I chose to focus this book on Making 10's because it is a simple concept that is difficult for first graders to learn. I designed this book around Making Tens in a fun rhyming way!

There once were five kittens who wanted to play in the winter snow, but until they put their mittens on, their mom said...

"No!"
The first kitten said..

"I only have one! We need ten altogether, to go have some fun!"

"How many more mittens do we need to be worn? I am not sure? Help me figure out how many more!"

"If I have one mitten on and ten mittens need to be worn altogether how many more do I need? Lets count together!"

"One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine! There are 9 mittens left over! So 9+1=10. "
1 2 3 4

5 6 7 8

"I have two mittens now, both for my paws. How many are left over for my brother Tom?"

"Let's count to find how many mittens are left!"

"One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight! There are 8 mittens left over and my sister Kitty is wearing 2! So 8+2=10."

"If I have one mitten on and ten mittens need to be worn altogether how many more do I need? Lets count together!"

"I needed another mitten one for my paw. How many are left for my sister Dawn?"

"Let's count to find how many mittens are left!"

"One, two, three, four, five, six! There are6 left over and my brothers and sisters are wearing 4 mittens! So 6+4=10."

"I need a mitten one for each of my paws to go out in the snow to play with my brother Claus. How many are left if I just take one?"

"I have both mittens for both of my paws How many are left over for my brother Bob?"

"Let's count to find how many mittens are left!"

"One, two, three, four! There are 4 mittens left over and my brothers and sisters are wearing the other 6! So 4+6=10."
