a tale as old as time...

Once upon a time, an Enchantress turned a handsome prince into a terrible beast when she discovered his selfishness.

She left behind an enchanted rose. If the prince did not find true love before the last rose petal fell, he would remain a beast forever.

In a village nearby, Belle lived with her father. More than anything, Belle wanted an adventure like those she read about in her beloved books.

Gaston wanted to marry Belle, but she refused.

Belle thought he was a beastly bore, and Gaston didn't understand why she was always reading. "It's not right for a woman to read," he said.

Belle took her book from Gaston and went back to the store to find a new one to read. She wanted to pick out a random one from her favourite genre and wondered what the probability of her choosing her favourite book was.

She realized since there were 40 books from that genre, she only had a 1 / 40 or 2.5% chance of choosing her favourite! So Belle decided to just get that one and go home.

Belle's father, Maurice, was an inventor. When she arrived home, she saw him working on his latest invention which was an automatic woodchopper, that he was taking to a contest at the county fair." You'll win first prize!" Belle declared.

On his way to the fair, Maurice got lost in the woods. A pack of wolves chased him to the gates of a nearby castle.

Not sure what he would find inside, Maurice entered the castle grounds cautiously.

Maurice could never have imagined the hideous beast that confronted him.

Thinking Maurice had come to stare at him, the Beast was furious. Without mercy, he locked this unwanted visitor in the dungeon.
As the Beast was carrying Maurice to the dungeon, he asked the Beast if he could win a game for his freedom. Maurice suggested, if he was able to spin a 2 on a spinner, then he shall be set free. The Beast agreed, not knowing the odds. When the he looked away, Maurice made a histogram of just how likely he was to win.

Since this was what the spinner looked like...
Maurice was able to make the histogram quickly because he had a 1/6 chance on all the numbers, except 2, where he had a 4/6 chance.
From this, Maurice decided it was a good bet. When he spun though, he landed on 1, forcing him to stay as the Beast's prisoner.

When her father's horse came home alone, Belle went in search of her father and was curious as to how many ways she could get to him

Since there were 3 ways East, and 3 ways South. She could've done the calculations like this....

But Belle decided to use a chart to figure out her solution. Both ways gave her an answer of 20 ways to reach her father.

Belle found her father locked up and begged the Beast for Maurice's freedom. The Beast did not agree, so she made a deal. If she could roll a five on a dice and flip a head on a coin, her father and her would be able to go. If not, then she would take his place.
Attempting to figure out the probability of her winning before hand, she multiplied her chances of rolling a 5 on a dice by her chances of flipping heads on a coin. This is when she realized she had a 1 / 12 chance and probably should've chosen dependent events, like choosing 2 cards from a deck.

The Beast won the deal, and made her promise to stay in the castle forever!

On her first night, Belle met the castle servants. The spell cast by the Enchantress had turned them into enchanted objects!

They were funny, friendly, and treated Belle like a special guest.

Belle was curious about the servants and wondered... if there are 140 servants total, 52 can sing, 71 can dance, and 40 can draw. 15 can sing and dance, 8 can dance and draw, 11 can draw and sing, and 2 can do all three, how many don't do anything?

She decided to make a venn diagram to solve this problem and figured out, only 9 servants don't sing, dance, or draw!
She also could've figured this out by using this formula...

At dinnertime, Belle refused the Beast's invitation to join him, which made him roar with frustration.

He was anxious to end the spell - and felt Belle was a sign of hope. Mrs. Potts, the teapot, and Lumiere, the candelabrum, told him to be patient and, above all, kind.

Later that night, Belle came upon the magic rose the Enchantress had left behind.

As Belle reached out to touch it, the Beast appeared and grabbed the precious rose. "Get out!" he yelled.

The beast began questioning if the spell would ever break. Then he realized the odds of Belle falling in love with him were 1:1, so he didn't lose hope.
