It was the third day of school and all of the kindergartners were outside for morning recess with their teacher, Mrs. Meowning, and their P.E. teacher Mr. Roar. Follow Whiskers as he learns the rules of the playground.

The kindergartners have spent the last few days learning the rules, but today was the first day all the kindergartners are outside. Whiskers, who is slightly forgetful, needs some help remembering the rules. She was standing on the cheese when Mr. Roar blew his whistle and said, “Whiskers, let me explain the rules again. It is not safe to stand on top of the cheese. There may only be five people on the cheese at a time and there is no jumping off of it.”

Whiskers and her friends ran over to the Tri-Horizontal bars. Mrs. Meowning, one of the teachers on duty, was already standing over there with some other students. She reminded Whiskers and her friends that you can’t stand on or jump off the bars; you can only climb on them or hang from them. Also there can only be one person on each bar at a time.
Whiskers ran to the green ladder and stood on top of the bars. “Whiskers, down from the top!” Mr. Roar roared, “Travel toward the fireman pole, flips are okay, but make sure there is space around you, and only 1 person can be on the ladder at a time. We don’t want anyone to get hurt while you are flipping.” Then he walked away.

Whiskers got off of the green ladder and headed for the loop climber. She was climbing up the slide when her classmate Rocket yelled, “Mrs. Meowning! She’s climbing up the slide!” Mrs. Meowning let out a sigh and went over to talk to Whiskers, “Whiskers, please get down from there, we only go down the slide, not up. Also, we go down 1 at a time and we always slide down feet first.’’

Whiskers felt a little embarrassed when her friends started to smirk and laugh as they pointed at her. She saw that nobody was on Charlie the Caterpillar and ran over so she could be alone. Whiskers climbed up and stood on Charlie, trying to balance. One of her friends, named Rosilee, ran over and helped Whiskers off so she wouldn’t fall. “Whiskers, don’t stand on top of Charlie. You're lucky Mr. Roar didn’t see you this time. You probably would have gotten in big trouble and might have had to sit on the wall.”

“Sorry,” Whiskers said,”I didn't know”. Looking disappointed, Whiskers walked away with her head down. “Would you like me to tell you the rules?” Rosilee asked. “ I guess,” said Whiskers. “There can be only five kids on Charlie, and don’t stand on him” she replied.

“Ok,” said Whiskers. “I want to go to the basketball hoops, will you come with me so I don’t get in trouble again?” “Sure,” said Rosilee. So ,they set off to play on the basketball hoops.
Whiskers tried to climb up the pole of the basketball hoop, and before Rosilee could say anything, Whiskers lost her grip and fell to the ground, scraping her knee. Whiskers started to scream. Rosilee ran over to Mr. Roar and said, “Whiskers got hurt!” Mr. Roar walked over to Whiskers and asked, “What happened? Are you ok?” In between sobs Whiskers says, “M...m...my n...n...knee.”

When Whiskers returned from the nurse, with a band-aid on her knee, Mr. Roar said, “I hear you fell while climbing the basketball pole.” Whiskers looked down at the ground.
“The rules are here to keep you safe,” continued Mr. Roar, “Basketball hoops are made for shooting a ball into. Hanging on the hoop is not allowed, and as I am sure you know...NO climbing on the pole.”
Whiskers, not wanting to return to the basketball hoop, went to climb on the spider web. Whiskers climbed to the top of the spider web and stood on top. “You can’t stand on top of the spider web,” reminded Mrs. Meowning. “Lock your legs when you hang from the bars, and to get off, hang from your hands and drop down.”
