This book is dedicated to Mr. Ferreri.

Sammy Sammy did not have much athletic skill
She wanted to learn, she had the desire and also the will
Most everyone chuckled as Sammy got up to bat.
Sammy was not only clumsy, she was also quite fat
Disappointed in herself for she was the worst on the team.
Maggie was determined to one day fit and be lean
She could not understand why some kids could be so mean
After the game Sammy was really quite sad.
It was certainly one of the worst days that Sammy ever had
Sammy was anxious and depressed and not thinking clearly.
She was holding on to her dignity but only just barely
Searching the refrigerator in hopes she would feel better,
eating lots of bread and cheeses including some cheddar
Sammy was not going to let anything else upset her
Sammy was teased and made fun of just about every day at school
She was called fatty and chubby and other names that were very cruel.
Most of the times Sammy did not wish to respond or counter attack.
On rare occasions Maggie got so mad she could not hold back.
She said, "Is your life so boring that you have nothing else better to do!"
"How would you like it and how would you feel if everyone picked on you?"
"So lose your stinger and make like a bee and buzz on through."

It took Sammie awhile to finally make up her mind
She promised herself she was going to reduce her stomach as well as her big behind
Sammy knew that now was the time for her and that it was not too late
She also knew she would look better, feel better, and run faster, if she lost the weight
But when was this new way of eating supposed to begin?
"Tomorrow morning," said Sammy displaying a big grin

The very next morning Sammy's new diet had begun.
Sammy was hoping that something about eating healthier could be fun.
Breakfast consisted of oatmeal with yogurt and fruit.
Sammy made a smiley face in the bowl which was actually quite cute
For lunch, a turkey sandwich with mustard and lettuce greens.
For dinner, there were vegetables with various proteins.
Sammy missed her treats but imagined how she would look in smaller sized jeans
The thought of cutting out junk food sometimes made Sammy sad.
She was pleasantly surprised that many healthy foods were actually quite tasty and for that she was glad
After the first week, Sammy shed a few pounds.
It was already easier for Sammy to move and bend up and down
Sammy still ate plenty but cut down on the sweets.
She had more energy and was slowly becoming a better athlete
Once a week she allowed herself one normal sized treat

On this one Saturday Sammy's baseball team was to play their last game of the year.
But this time instead of being laughed at, Sammy received lots of cheer.
Everybody thought that Sammy would strike out as she did so many times before
They did not realize what a special moment Maggie had in store
it was two out in the last inning and the game was tied one to one
Sammy was batting and to everybody's surprise Maggie hit a home run
Everyone jumped up and down, for this was the first game that this team had won

Sammy was now being teased less and less.
She was more confident and had less stress.
Some of Sammy's classmates invited Sammy to sit with them during lunch break.
Sammy enjoyed their company but didn't enjoy the overcooked hamburger steak
They asked Sammy if she wanted to hang out one day.
Sammy said, "Great, yeah, sure, okay, okay."
Sammy immediately thought of a great game they all could play
The following week Sammy was invited to her first sleepover get together.
She was going to Tina's house with Mary, Susan, and Heather
Sammy couldn't make up her mind on exactly what to pack.
Sammy knew she was bringing cut up celery and carrot sticks for snacks
The girls wanted to know from each other who do you like and who likes you.
Susan and Tina began tickling Sammy saying, "Tell us who, tell us who?"
Sammy giggled and said, "Alright I'll tell you, I like Peter, Robert, and Drew."
They listened to music all night as well as playing truth and dare
When they got sleepy they asked when they were going to bed and where
Susan yelled out, "I am going to use the bathroom first."
Twenty minutes later Sammy said, "Hurry up or I am going to burst."
Sammy was worried that she might leave a smell.
Sammy said to herself, "there is nothing I can do about it, so oh well."
But taking no chances, Sammy brought deodorant spray so no one could tell
