Hace muchos años, vivían en el País Vasco las lamias. Vivían en los ríos y, por las noches, cantaban mientras peinaban su cabello con peines de oro. Eran muy bellas, pero no eran como vosotros, no tenían pies como nosotros, sino que eran como las patas de los patos.

Years ago, there were some criatures called lamia in the Basque Country. They lived in streams and they used to comb their hair with golden combs while they sang. Lamias where so beautiful, but they were not like humans, they didn’t have legs, like us, they feet were similar to ducks' feet.

La gente del pueblo decía: “No son como nosotros y claro, lo tienen que pagar de alguna manera". Poco a poco, ante tanta envidia y tanta tontería, las lamias se fueron escondiendo.

People used to say that they were different to them and due to so much gossip, they decided to hide.

Pero no os preocupéis, nos queda una y aquí venimos a contar su historia. Aquí está la historia de “Erreka Mari” 

But there was a lamia that didn`t leave her stream and we are going to tell her story: Erreka Mari, the last lamia.

Un buen día, un pastor llamado Martín, como cada día, fue al monte con sus ovejas.

Cuando llegó al río, como estaba muy cansado, decidió echarse una siesta. De repente, surgió del río un sonido que despertó a Martín.

Like every day, Martin the shepherd went to the mountain with his sheep. When he arrived into the stream, he got asleep. But, suddenly, a noise coming from the water woke him up.

-¡Vaya! ¡Ya no tengo sueño! Jugaré con el eco para no aburrirme. ¡¡¡Buenos días!!! ías, ías, ías, ías.

¡¡¡Buenos días!!! ías,ias, ías, ías.

- What’s that! It’s an echo I will play with it!- thought Martin.

- Good morning! ning,ning, ning, ning.

-  Good morning! ning,ning, ning, answered something from the stream.

¡¡¡ Rayos!!!- Creo que alguien tiene ganas de tomarme el pelo! Probaré una última vez. ¡¡Soy Martín!! Tin, tín, tín, tín

-Y yo “Erreka Mari”- ari, ari, ari, ari. Y la lamia salió del agua.

- That’s strange- thought Martin- There must be someone tricking me I will try again I’m Martin! Tin, tin, tín, tin.

-And I’m Erreka Mari! ari, ari, ari, ari. And the lamia came out from the water.

-  ¿Quién eres? ¿Cómo te llamas? ¿Dónde Vives?

- Me llamo Erreka Mari, adoro el blanco y el verde, vivo libre y feliz, me encontrarás en el rio.

- Who are you?- asked Martin- What’s your name? Where do you live?

-I’m Erreka Mari, I love white and green, I live free and happy, you will find me in the stream.

Al final, Erreka Mari y Martín se hicieron amigos. Pero los vecinos del pueblo, sobre todo Agustina y Catalina, se dieron cuenta de que algo ocurría

After some days meeting in the stream, Martin and Erreka Mari became good friends. But people from the village, mainly Agustina and Kattalin, two embittered old ladies, realized that something was going on with Martin.

- Creo que está con una chica – dijo Agustina.

- No es del pueblo – dijo Catalina – He estado preguntado por ahí y estoy segura, no es del pueblo.

- Pues voy a enterarme con quién anda. Preguntaré en el mercado, en el bar y en todas partes.

 -I would say that hi is dating with some girl- told Agustina to Kattalin.

-Sure, but she is not from the village!- said Kattalin- I have been asking and she is not from the village

-Don’t worry! I will discover who the girl is! I will ask in the market, in the pub everywhere!

Y se enteraron. Supieron que la chica era Erreka Mari, la última lamia del País Vasco. A Agustina y a Catalina no les gustaba la lamia ya que no era como los seres humanos, así que, decidieron echarla del pueblo. Y sí, lo intentaron.

And finally those old ladies discovered that the girl was Erreka Mari, the last lamia from the Basque Country. Agustina and Kattalin didn’t like the lamia because she was not like the rest, so they decided to chase her out from the village.
