Once upon a time, a puppy named Lady lived in a beautiful town in Georgia. Lady was beautiful, strong, smart, and fast. She was more attractive than the moon, faster than a cheetah, and smarter than José Hernández. 

José Hernández is a Mexican American migrant worker who became an astronaut for NASA and was selected for the Space Shuttle mission STS-128 in 2004.

That puppy is a rocket!

Esa cachorrita es un rocket.

More beautiful than me? 

I don't think so! 

Más bella que yo? 

¡Yo no creo eso!

Smarter than me? 

She will have to prove it! 

¿Más inteligente que yo? 

¡Va a tener que probarlo!

Había una vez, una perrita llamada 

Lady que vivía en un lindo pueblo de Georgia. Lady era bella, fuerte, inteligente y rápida. Ella era más bella que la luna, más rápida que un leopardo y más inteligente que José Hernández.

José Hernández es un ex trabajador migrante 

Mexicano-estadounidense que se convirtió en astronauta de la NASA y fue parte de la misión del transbordador espacial STS-128 en 2004.

Lady's best friend was Lali. Lady and her best friend lived in a house near the forest. Their home was small, red, and warm. The forest around the house was fantastic! It had beautiful yellow, red, blue, and white flowers. 

Forests are essential for land and water conservation, and we should care for them. 

Lady and Lali loved playing soccer in the front yard. They wanted to play for Team USA in the FIFA Women's World Cup. FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association.

Okay, Okay!

¡Está bien! ¡Está bien!

La mejor amiga de Lady era Lali. Lady y su mejor amiga vivían en una casa cerca del bosque. Su hogar era pequeño, rojo y acogedor. ¡El bosque alrededor de la casa era fantástico! Tenía hermosas flores amarillas, rojas, azules y blancas.

Los bosques son esenciales para la conservación del suelo y del agua y debemos cuidarlos.

A Lady y a Lali les encantaba jugar al fútbol en el patio delantero. Querían jugar para el equipo de Estados Unidos en la Copa Mundial Femenina de la FIFA. 

FIFA significa Fédération Internationale de Football Association (Federación Internacional de Fútbol Asociación).

Lady loved Lali, but she often complained that Lali spent most of her days at school. When Lali was home, she spent a lot of time studying for the End-of-Course Tests. Lali had to get good grades to be accepted into college. She wanted to be a businesswoman when she grew up.

"Please, let’s play outside," Lady used to ask Lali.

"Sorry, I can’t play now. I have to study," Lali used to respond.

I am sorry,  I can't. 

Lo siento, no puedo.

Let's play outside.

Vamos a jugar afuera.

Lady amaba a Lali, pero a menudo se quejaba de que Lali pasaba la mayor parte de sus días en la escuela. Cuando Lali estaba en casa, pasaba mucho tiempo estudiando para los Exámenes de Fin de Curso. Lali tenía que sacar buenas notas para ser aceptada en la universidad. Quería ser una mujer de negocios cuando creciera.

“Por favor, juguemos afuera”, solía pedirle Lady a Lali.

“Lo siento, no puedo jugar ahora. Tengo que estudiar”, solía responder Lali.

Lady felt lonely when Lali was not around. One day, while Lali was at school, Lady felt bored.

"I’m tired of being as lonely as the sun." What if I go hiking along the edge of the forest? That would be so much fun!" Lady thought.

Without thinking much about it, Lady jumped into the forest, looking for adventures. The forest was beautiful; there were flowers everywhere.

"Hi, pretty puppy," said the flowers.

"Hola, flores lindas," Lady replied in Spanish.

Hi, cute puppy!

¡Hola, perrita linda!

Hi, girls!

¡Hola, chicas!

Lady se sentía sola cuando Lali no estaba cerca. Un día, mientras Lali estaba en la escuela, Lady se sintió aburrida.

"Estoy cansada de sentirme tan sola como el sol." ¿Y si voy a caminar por el borde del bosque? ¡Sería muy divertido!", pensó Lady.

Sin pensarlo mucho, Lady saltó al bosque en busca de aventuras. ¡El bosque era hermoso! Había flores por todas partes.

"Hola, perrita bonita", dijeron las flores.

"Hola, flores lindas", respondió Lady en español.

That forest was as beautiful as heaven must be! There were squirrels, bunnies, and foxes everywhere. All of them were happily playing among the flowers.

"Hi, puppy," said the animals to Lady.

"Hola, squirrels, bunnies, and foxes," Lady replied.

"This forest is not as dangerous as Lali tells me. It’s nice to live here," Lady thought while venturing deeper into the forest.

"Oh, there’s a pond!" Lady exclaimed.

The pond was huge and filled with colorful fish. Beautiful tulips surrounded it.

"Hi, cute puppy!" the little fish greeted Lady.

"Hola, pescaditos," Lady replied.

Hi friends, nice to meet you.

Hola amigos, mucho gusto.

Ese bosque era tan hermoso como debe ser el cielo. ¡Había ardillas, conejitos y zorros por todas partes! Todos ellos jugaban felices entre las flores.

"Hola, perrita", dijeron los animales a Lady.

"Hola, ardillas, conejitos y zorros", respondió Lady.

"Este bosque no es tan peligroso como me dice Lali. Es agradable vivir aquí", pensó Lady mientras se aventuraba más profundo en el bosque.

"¡Oh, hay un estanque!", exclamó Lady.

El estanque era enorme y estaba lleno de peces coloridos. También lo rodeaban hermosos tulipanes.

"¡Hola, perrita linda!", saludaron los pececitos a Lady.

"Hola, pescaditos", respondió Lady.

Hi, puppy! 

¡Hola, cachorrita! 

Lady was excited in the forest until the birds suddenly flew away from the trees, and the bunnies, squirrels, and foxes vanished into the deep woods. In an instant, the forest transformed into a desert. Lady was completely alone.

"What happened?" Lady yelled.

"Where are you going?" she called to her new friends.

"Run, puppy, run! The monster is coming! The monster is coming!" a little voice shouted from behind a big rock.

Lady was so scared that she couldn’t move, run, or hide.

Run, puppy, run!

¡Corre, cachorra, corre! 

Lady estaba emocionada en el bosque hasta que, de pronto, los pájaros salieron volando de los árboles y los conejitos, las ardillas y los zorros desaparecieron en lo más profundo del bosque. En un instante, el bosque se transformó en un desierto. Lady estaba completamente sola.

“¿Qué pasó?”, gritó Lady.

“¿A dónde van?”, llamó a sus nuevos amigos.

“¡Corre, perrita, corre! ¡El monstruo viene! ¡El monstruo viene!”, gritó una vocecita desde detrás de una gran roca.

Lady estaba tan asustada que no podía moverse, correr ni esconderse.

"There it is! There it is!" another squirrel screamed.

The big creature shook the ground and broke the trees and everything in its path. Lady was speechless and petrified with fear!

She was frozen like a fossil. All she could do was stare at the enormous creature as it approached her. It looked like a mix of different animals: it had the bill and webbed feet of a duck, the tail of a beaver, and the body of an otter. Lady had never seen anything like it in her short life. The creature was as rare as a comet.

"Please don’t hurt me! Please don’t hurt me!" Lady cried in despair.

However, the strange creature just stopped in front of Lady, opened its big, flat bill, and...

Please don't hurt me!

¡Por favor no me  pegues!

Go away, you don't belong here! 

¡Tu no perteneces a este lugar! 

“¡Ahí está! ¡Ahí está!” gritó otra ardilla.

La enorme criatura sacudió el suelo y rompió los árboles y todo lo que encontraba a su paso. Lady estaba sin palabras, petrificada de miedo.

Ella estaba inmóvil como un fósil. Todo lo que podía hacer era mirar a la enorme criatura que se acercaba. Parecía una mezcla de diferentes animales: tenía el pico y las patas palmeadas de un pato, la cola de un castor y el cuerpo de una nutria. Lady nunca había visto algo así en toda su corta vida. La criatura era tan rara como un cometa.

“¡Por favor, no me hagas daño! ¡Por favor, no me hagas daño!” gritó Lady desesperada. Sin embargo, la extraña criatura se detuvo frente a Lady, abrió su gran pico plano y…

...the creature spoke to Lady.

"I don't want to hurt you. I'm new in Georgia, and I just want to make friends. I only wanted to play with you guys!" said the creature, tears welling up in its eyes.

"No one likes me because I am different. No one in this forest is nice to me. Everyone calls me a monster!" cried the creature.

"But I’m not a monster! I’m a platypus, and my name is Cristiano. I’m big and strong because I eat lots of veggies," the poor platypus explained to Lady.

Go away, ugly monster!

¡Aléjate, monstruo horrible! 

...la criatura le habló a Lady.

“No quiero hacerte daño. Soy nuevo en Georgia y solo quiero hacer amigos. ¡Solo quería jugar con ustedes!” dijo la criatura, con lágrimas formándose en sus ojos.

“A nadie le gusto porque soy diferente. Nadie en este bosque es amable conmigo. ¡Todos me llaman monstruo!” gritó la criatura.

“¡Pero no soy un monstruo! Soy un ornitorrinco y mi nombre es Cristiano. Soy grande y fuerte porque como muchos vegetales”, explicó el pobre ornitorrinco a Lady.

I just want to play. 

I am lonely as a missing shoe. 

Solo quiero jugar .

Estoy tan solo como un zapato perdido.
