Mom! that kid just called me a primate!!

4

Well, let's look it up in the dictionary.
But what IS a primate?!

5

Primate: Noun - any of an order (Primates) of mammals that are
characterized especially by advanced development
of binocular vision, specialization of the appendages
for grasping, and enlargement of the cerebral hemispheres
and that include humans, apes, monkeys, and related forms
(as lemurs and tarsiers)
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/primate
But what does that mean?!
Hmm...maybe that scientist over there will help
explain it to us.

6

Sir, do you have aminute to teach us
about primates?
Why sure I do.If you would like
to come to the zoo
with me I can even
show you some!
Yay!
7

So how do youknow if an animal
is a primate?

8

Primates are mammals. This means they are warm
blooded, carry their babies
inside their bodies, and once
the babies are born, they feed
feed them with milk they make
with glands in their bodies.
(Havilan p. 56)
Primates have binocularvision. This means their eyes sit
sit next to each, face forward and
the field of vision overlaps.
(Haviland p. 62)
Primates have hands andfeet that can grasp or hold
on to things. (Haviland p. 64)
Primates have enlargedbrains, especially in the
cerebral hemispheres. That is
the part of the brain that supports
our thoughts.
(Haviland p. 64)
PRIMATE EXHIBITPROSIMIANS LEFT ANTHROPOIDS RIGHT
9

But what does that mean?!

There are two suborders or types ofprimates: Prosimii and Anthropedia
Fun Facts: Prosimii comes from the Latin words meaning "before monkeys" and
Anthropoidea comes from the Greek word
meaning "human-like."(Haviland p. 58)
But how can Itell them apart?

10

Anthropoids are quadrupedal. This meansall four legs are used for walking.
Anthropoids can growmuch larger than prosimians.
The Western Lowland Gorilla
male weighs an average of 396 lbs!
(WLG Facts 2012)

Prosimians are the size of cats or even smaller
Prosimians are hind-leg dominate. This helps to jump and leap to
and from the trees.
Anthropoids have a shorter snout.

Prosimians have along snout.(Haviland p. 58 & 61)
11

Get ready to see some prosimiiThere in the grass!
It's a family of lemurs!

Look! Climbing the tree! It's a loris!

12
