I dedicate this book to Mrs. Rouse, if it was not for her, I would not have written it.

The American novelist Kathryn Stockett, is the author of this famous, well-known novel. She was born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1969. To study creative writing and English, Stockett attended the University of Alabama to receive her degrees. “The Help” is the only book that she is well known for, that gained much of its’ popularity when they made a movie-version of this book. Kathryn is now happily married to her husband, Keith Rogers, since 2011.

Although not banned, the book holds touchy subjects lead me to believe that, if pushed, it could cause upset and lead it to banishment. Some of the book’s talk of pro-Civil Rights movement and such, may cause ethnocentric people to become frustrated and mad. This anger could lead to a snowball effect and have a parent not allow their child to read the book. It also speaks of segregation, shows white privilege, talks about miscarriage, and discrimination of women. For these many reasons, I am leading to believe, that this book is just a matter of time until a school says to ban it.
In this time of history, it is common to use racial slurs and show racism, to other races than white. A friend of Skeeter’s, Hilly Holbrook, is among the individuals who are racist to African Americans, and lives to torment them as if it were a sport. Skeeter is one of the very few white people in Jackson, Mississippi, that are kind and compassionate to African Americans. The friendship and respect Skeeter has for Aibleen and Minnie is an important lesson in life that everyone should learn. Because Skeeter looks past their differences, she gains two very fun, loving, and spiritual women. As they say, Skeeter marches to the beat of her own drum, the one in her heart. Read this book to learn the valuable lesson, to not be afraid to not follow the crowd, and treat everyone as you would want treated.
