The Mouth
Chewing
I enjoy imitating the animal I
hope to become, the cow.
My favorite part of it is its
elegant mouth. One day I
wish to chew cud. But I’m
stuck with other food, like
hamburgers. Hamburgers are
the ground up remains of cows! I
resign myself to slicing the chunks
into itty bitty little pieces.

The Mouth
SalivaWe are amylase. We are the
piranhas of the mouth. We
see starches and BAM!
We attack. Leaving only
sugar. Ha ha. Ha. Ha.

Esophagus
PeristalsisWave! Hey! We do the
W-a-v-e
all
the
way
down
the esophagus! That food
is going down... to the
stomach, that is! Bye,
bye, now!

Stomach
ExpansionRubber bands SNAP!
But I don’t.
Nope, I just s-l-o-w-l-y
expand when food
comes in and s-l-o-w-l-y
contract as food drains
out. Sigh. I wish I were a
rubber band.

Chemical and Mechanical Digestion
StomachMixing is my spe-ci-a-li-ty. I’m a
very good mixer. Churn, churn,
churn. When I mix, I help aid
digestion by integrating acids with
the food I need to digest. I’m
helping!
“Look! There’s a big particle!”
“I got it!”
Pepsin and HCL guard the stomach
and break down large food
particles. Bark! Bark!

Small Intestine
Chemical Breakdown of FoodMy name is Dedee the
duodenum. I’m the first child of
the Swanson-small family, and
I ALWAYS get first pick of
whatever I want. Some call me
spoiled, but I would just call
myself acidic. My favorite
hobby, the only thing I do
actually, is chemically break
down semi-solid food into
liquid.

Small Intestine
AbsorptionOur names are Ivy the ileum and Jill
the jejunum. We are the other two
members of the Swanson-small
family, and we fight over everything,
especially nutrients. We battle to
separate as many nutrients as we can
from the semi-solid food to be
delivered into the bloodstream. On
average, our Swanson-small family
measures 20 feet long (each of our
heights added together).
