Serious Post-Secondary Struggles: Dorm Strife, Theater Stress, and Homework Struggles
This book is dedicated to my mom for supporting me with whatever I do. It's also dedicated to my brother for being so patient while I wrote this book.

POW! I surged off of my fluffy bed and screamed as my annoying roommate practically fell through the floor with laughter. I proclaimed annoyingly, “What was that noise?” My roommate pulled himself off the ground, swallowed his laughter, and giggled, “You weren’t waking up so I popped a balloon in your face!”

I gave him a dirty, mean look and stared at our clock. The clock hands showed 8:30am. “We’re going to be late for class!” I yelled. As we scrambled to get all of our school supplies around and get our clothes changed, someone walked through the door.

It was the principal herself. My mind started to race and think, “What did I do, oh no!” Then she turned to my roommate Emmett and stated, “Here, your schedule got updated. Also, clean your junk up, please.” As she turned around and left, Emmett and I both sighed in relief. Emmett’s a pretty nice guy once you get to know him, but he’s annoying. He came to Harvard for the same reason as me, we both wanted to be physicists. We had a lot of trouble trying to share our space in the first hour we settled, so we just decided to get half of the dorm each.

When she left we finally engaged Sonic mode and ran to our first class and we barely made it in time. This was our Physics Lecture class and as soon as we took our seats the professor started lecturing us about the Laws of General Relativity. I frantically took notes and by the end of it, I had three pages of notes, two-sided!

Then, when I finished, I looked up and saw him giving out papers to everybody. I picked up the crisp paper and it stated that we were doing a group project that introduces ourselves and why we are interested in physics that’s due next week. Right now, I’m feeling extremely lucky because all of my friends are in my group. Those friends are Emmett, Jaydon, and Ethan. The professor boomed, “Get together with your group and make a plan! I suggest you make this as good as you can because it is worth twenty percent of your whole grade!” So, we got together and discussed about how we were going to get this done. We decided that we would finish it all tonight.

After we discussed, I went to my next classes. As the day went on I kept getting more and more homework. When my last class finished, I went back to my dorm and took an hour long nap. I rolled out of bed and it was about 3:00pm in the afternoon so, I sat down and did my homework for until it was time to leave the cramped dorm. I left for the library and arrived quickly.

Emmett suggested as soon as we started working, “Hey guys, want to go out to eat tonight at McDonald's and then meet up somewhere fun?” Jaydon and Ethan said yes, but I still had at least another two hours of homework so I had to say no. My friends got really angry at me and ditched me.

Then, I went back to the dorm and finished my homework and the group project all by myself.

Theater Sign-Ups

As my college year went on, more and more activities and clubs were formed. I was walking to one of my classes and then my eye caught a glimpse of the activity board. I stopped and looked at it and saw a theater sign-up paper. I thought to myself about how big of a theater fan I was and how much time it would take out of my homework time. I thought about it for a while and decided I would do it because I could make some new friends.

I went through the day and went to bed early because tomorrow was the day of the theater auditions. The play we are doing is called Xanadu. I have done this play previously, but it was the junior version. I want to be the lead role for the boys. I woke up in the morning at 6:00am and ran down to where the auditions were taking place.

I strolled through the crowds of people chattering wanting to be in the play, but I only saw two other boys. Walking into the audition room, I caught a quick glimpse at the director. He was everything I thought a college theater director would look like. He had a long, silky, red scarf and a very monotone gray beanie on. I waited around for about twenty minutes and then the director finally called my name. “Ian Candy,” he boomed, “please come up to the room right outside the stage to do your auditions!”

I paced up the steep stairs off the stage into the audition room. The audition went on for about ten minutes and then finally the director exclaimed, “I think I have a good part for you Mr. Candy. Just remember the role sheet will be up on the bulletin board where you found the theater sign up sheet.” Then another day went by really fast.

Theater Results:
Ian- ~~~~~~
Brittney: ------------------------
Yuri: ----------------

I got up to go see the role sheet that was posted up on the bulletin board but I saw something I dreaded. I didn’t get the lead role I wanted. Before I started to get depressed, I saw something in fine-print at the bottom of the sheet. It said that rehearsals were from 8:00pm to 11:00pm. I pondered to myself, well how am I supposed to get my homework done now? It was finally around 7:40pm and I headed to the Harvard Theater.

It was exactly 8:00 when I arrived there and the first thing we did was introduce ourselves and something interesting about us. As we went around the circle, the lead role girl was very sassy when she said something interesting about her. She annoyingly said, “Something interesting about me is that everyone is friends with me. Also, my name is Brittany.” We continued around the circle and something very exciting happened. A girl came to Harvard to be a Physicist as well!
