Joshua Tree National Park
(Side Fact, The Joshua Tree is actually part of the Yucca Family)
Piles of rock and interesting trees, rattlesnakes hissing, bats go creak. Joshua Tree National Park is found in South-Eastern California. It is named after the Joshua Tree, which are found in the park. It was founded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The geologic formation of the piles of rock found in the park started around 270 million years ago. Back then, most of the land was one mass of land called Pangaea. Then, the sea level (Farallon Plate) collided into the land (Continental Plate). The heat from the earth made the water and gasses rise from the farallon plate rising into the continental plate causing a chamber of magma. 100 million years later, the magma cooled into stone. Then the cooled magma cracked because of all the pressure that was on it.
The water seeps into the cracks of the stone making it into soil, and then the soil goes away leaving the piles of rock we see at Joshua Tree National Park today! These piles of rock are fun to explore and see how amazing nature can be. These rocks are a result of Earth's changes over the years, since Earth's crust is broken into pieces and is constantly moving.
Joshua Tree is a popular National Park. As much as 1.3 Million visitors pass by every year. Many people like to explore the giant piles of rock and learn more about the geologic formation of the rocks. Well as you know, that happened 250 million years ago.
It has many attractions and activities that visitors are drawn too. There is rockclimbing, hiking, horseback riding and even a Ranger program for kids. There are the amazing shapes of the rocks, like Skull Rock, Arch Rock, Cap Rock and the Ryan Mountain to name a few.

Joshua Tree National Park History
(Side fact, The Joshua Tree flowers give off an unpleasant scent)
We know about the geologic formation of the park, and the founder, but who cared so, so much about this natural monument? That would be Minerva Hoyt.
Minerva Hamilton Hoyt was born March 27th, 1866 near Durant , Mississippi to a social family. When she got married to Dr. Albert Sherman Hoyt and moved to California. She got very engaged to the Southern California Deserts. She was very interested in cactuses and the Joshua Trees. Her husband died later on, and she got more concerned that the car traffic might hurt the deserts nearby. So, she started teaching people about the beautiful things in the desert. In 1928, she kept educating people and she went on Garden Club of America show in New York.
