Causes
The first reason is the Alliances were formed
The European countries made mutual defense alliances that promised if one country
went into war, their allies were pulled into the conflict created.
*Alliances before WW1 were:
~Russia & Serbia
~Germany & Austria-Hungary
~France & Russia
~Britain & France & Belgium
~Japan & Britain
The second cause was Imperialism
Imperialism is when a nation gains more power and wealth by increasing the size of their
territories. Before the Great War (WW1) areas of Asia and Africa were desired by the
countries of Europe because of the resources they provide under a country's control. The
mutual wanting helped push the world into war.
The third reason for WW1 was Militarism
The increase of Germany's military was the greatest factor in this cause. Britain, also, was
increasing its navies. These changes soon began to have an effect on the public.

Causes
The fourth reason was Nationalism
The slavic people in Bosnia & Herezegonia felt the need to leave Austria-Hungary
and join Serbia. The jealousy and strive for domination caused a lot of the conflict of
WW1.
The most Major/Direct cause: Assassination of Arch Duke, Franz Ferdinand
June 1914, the assassination was the act of a Serbian. The Serbian nationalist
murdered Franz and his wife when the were in Austria-Hungary territory: Sarajero,
Bosnia. Serbia wanted to take Bosnia & Herezegonia. The crime led the the declaring of
war on Serbia by Austria-Hungary.
The final cause was Crisis
Morocco Crisis~1904, Britain gave Morocco to France but the need for
independence was high for the Moroccans. Germany supported Morocco in this action,
but a conference occurred which gave France the possession of Morocco. The Germans
protested in 1911.
Bosnia Crisis~ In 1908, the Turkish province of Bosnia was taken by Austria-
Hungary. This angered Serbia, who wanted the province. Tension between the two
countries rose.

Why & when did the US get involved
The Germans used unauthorized submarines along the US East
Coast. When Germany continued the warfare in 1917, the Americans
were very provoked. US transport ship, The Lusitania, was targeted and
sunk by German U-boats in order to stop the German's rival, Britain,
from getting supplies from the US. In the action, 1195 people died,
including 128 Americans.
The US gave a huge loan to the British and French. The investment
was 12 billion dollars. If they were to lose, they wouldn't be able to pay
the US back, and then the US would go into a economic crisis. To
ensure the debt would be paid, The US joined the war.
Certain events caused Woodrow Wilson to feel threatened and
announced to the people that war would be possible and the US should
prepare. The US wanted to demonstrated it's power, also. In addition,
Mexico demanded that US troops leave mexico and the public was
frowning upon the US's intervention with the neighboring country.
Wilson was forced to leave. The Germans helping Mexico fight against
Wilson was a possibility, so Wilson knew that action was required.

Why & when did the US get involved in the war
Wilson desired to make the world stable for the US ("Wilson's War
Address to Congress"), the attack on the Lusitania darkened the US's
view on Germany, and Britain/France began to believe that they were
fighting for freedom against evil. The formal reasons for the US joining
the war (the sinking of the Lusitania and submarine warfare) could have
been forgotten if not for France/Britain's new point of view
The Zimmerman Telegram was sent from German secretary to the
German Ambassador to Mexico
It offered the following:
~February 1, 1917, German submarine warfare will be reinstated
unrestricted
~US must continue to not to get involved in war
~Germany offered an alliance with Mexico that ensured that if the US
breaks neutral state, Mexico is required to support Germany in a financial
alliance; If Mexico fights, they will receive New Mexico, Texas, and
Arizona
All of the above led to the US declaring war on July 28, 1917

Outcomes
Germany's effects was the German Empire was defeated, lost its
colonial territories, stripped of its European territories (Prussian Poland, West
Prussia, & the Rhineland), and afterward, the rise of Hitler.
Austria-Hungary's effects was the Austro-Hungarian Empire fell the
farthest, including its separate countries of Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and
Romania.
Ottoman Empire's effects was it was removed of its claims in Trebizond,
Palestine, and Iraq.
England's effects was before WW1, England had been the center of the
British empire, but the war started the collapse of the nation with the
increasing demands for independence in Europe. It had also been the creditor
for the world, supplying other countries with shipping and insurance services.
The war cost england so massively, that it took away all of its credits and the
country became greatly indebted to the US.
France's effects was the loss of huge amount of manpower in the war
diminished an entire generation of Frenchmen and is assumed to have left a
gape when the time came for that generation's leadership came. Populations
decreased below Germany's and England's in the 19th century. the country
suffered from massive property damage because most of the war was fought
on French territory.

Outcomes
Russia's effects was WW1 cause the Russian Revolution and the
Civil War that lasted for 3 years after the Great War. The Civil War
included foreign intervention and by 1921, a economic collapse that
caused a massive famine happened. The Russian Revolution came
earlier than expected because of WW1.
US's effects was the world's financial center shifted from London,
England to New York, US. The US didn't suffer as greatly as the other
countries in WW1, since it joined late in the war and was separated
from the battle by the ocean. The US only lost about 100000 citizens
in the war. The US became the main continental power including
population and resources. The war caused a major rise the US's
economy with wages and employment. The US benefited from WW1 by
becoming the greatest power in the world.
Working class's outcome was it became in the favor of distributing
of income and the status of the aristocracy was diminished. The Labor
Party rose in England to become one of the two major powers.

Outcomes
The Treaty of Versailles was developed in order for Germany to
take full responsibility for the Great War.
Terms of the Treaty
*Territorial Clauses- Germany was to have land taken away and
given to other countries
*Reparations- Germany was to pay 6600 million euros for WW1's
damage to the world
*Disarmament- Germany was to have limited military power; a small
and 6 naval ships were only allowed
The League of Nations was organized in 1919 to help
prevent another war. All countries were supposed to be members
and all conflict were to be negotiated rather than fought out. If this
didn't work, the two countries were to stop trading and if the conflict
still wasn't resolved, war was to break out.

Positive Effect
Women gained the right to vote and they were able to come
forward to show they were very capable. Women were began to
do less traditional work such as cooking, cleaning, and taking care
of the children. The women population left a mark in history by their
rights starting to increase to a great extent.
