To my class

Hi my space friends! My name is Roger, and I live on a moon that orbits Planet Jupiter called Europa! Today we are going to talk about all eight of the planets that exist in our solar system! Can't wait to learn with you!
In our solar system there are eight planets. These eight planets orbit around the Sun which is at the center of our solar system. The name of our solar system is the Milky Way (but it's not the yummy candy!). It is one of the millions of galaxies that exist in the universe. The planets all have different features and characteristics that make them special, do you know which planet we live on?

Hint: It is blue and green and the third planet from the sun...
The answer is.. Earth! And soon we will learn some more about the planet that we call home!
The eight planets are in order from closest to the sun to furthest are:
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

To help remember the order of the planets you can use the acronym;
My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos
Mercury - My
Venus- Very
Earth- Educated
Mars- Mother
Jupiter- Just
Saturn-Served
Uranus- Us
Neptune- Nachos
Yum! I love nachos!
Our solar system, The Milky Way is said to be about 4.6 billion years old. It holds the eight planets, and one star (The Sun), and it is about 11.65 trillion miles big. Our sun is the biggest object in the solar system and because of the sun's gravity, it keeps all the planets in its orbit. This means that all the planets travel in a circle around the sun at different speeds and they won't just float off into space!

Wow! That is big!

Hey look, there's Mercury! The smallest planet in the solar system!

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and it is the smallest planet in the solar system it is 4,879 km in diameter.
It only takes Mercury 88 days to orbit around the Sun one time.
Mercury does not have any moons or rings but it does have a molten core and is the second hottest planet in the solar system.
Mercury only has 38% of the gravity that Earth has so your weight on Mercury would be 38% of your weight on Earth.
Mercury is the second densest planet, this is due to Mercury being made up of mostly heavy metals and rocks.

And there is Venus! I need my shades; Venus is the second brightest thing in the Sky, right next to our Moon.
Venus
Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It is the second largest terrestrial planet. Sometimes it is referred to as Earth's sister because they are similar in mass and size.
Venus has no moons or rings and is about 12,104 km in size. It takes 225 days for Venus to orbit the Sun.
The temperature of Venus can reach up to 471 degrees Celsius which is about 879 degrees fahrenheit (that's hot!)

Look! There is Earth, your home. Here is a little bit about your planet.
Earth
Our planet Earth is the third planet from the Sun and is the largest terrestrial planet. There is one moon that orbits the Earth and is said to be about 4.5 billion years old. Lucky for us, it is the only known planet that supports life. Due to the metallic core, Earth is the densest planet in the solar system. Earth is made up of mostly iron, oxygen and silicon. And it takes the earth 365 days to orbit the Sun one time, this is why one year is 365 days long!

The Red Planet is Mars! Some scientists say that there might be life on there.
Mars
Mars, or the "Red Planet", is the fourth planet from the Sun and it is the second smallest planet. It is called the red planet because of its reddish appearance and the atmosphere of Mars is made up of mostly carbon dioxide.
Mars has two moons that orbit it and it is also home to one of the tallest mountains in our solar system called Olympus Mons. There have been several missions to Mars that have allowed us to study its atmosphere and land. Also, there have been pieces of Mars that have landed on Earth that has allowed scientist to study it before the missions started.
It takes 687 days for Mars to orbit the Sun.

It's Jupiter! Jupiter has many moons and there is the one that my friends and I live on called, Europa!
