Ringgg! Hannah and Kaylie walked into Mr.
Smith’s second grade class. The two of
them had been best friends for as long as
they could remember. They giggled as they
skipped in the classroom, ready to learn.

Today, Mr. Smith was teaching
subtraction. “17-6 = what?” Mr. Smith
asked the class. Just as the kids were
about to respond, someone walked in the
room.

A small girl with brown hair stood in the
doorway and stared quietly at the floor.
Next to her stood a woman with a bright,
smiling face. Springsteen Elementary School
never got new students. Hannah looked at
Kaylie, and her brown eyes were dancing
with curiosity.

Mr. Smith warmly announced, “Class, this
is our new student, Lily. She can sit in the
empty seat next to Hannah.” Hannah’s
heart sped up; she wondered what Lily was
like. Lily followed the tall lady to the
desk.

Lily sat down next to Hannah, still looking
scared. The woman with her whispered to
Hannah. “Hello, Hannah. I’m Mrs. Jones. This
is Lily’s first day at school, and she’s really
nervous. I’m here because I translate
everything using sign language. Lily’s deaf.”

It's okay. Say something!
Hannah was so surprised, she couldn’t even
speak! Hannah had never met someone that
was deaf, and she wondered how she was
supposed to talk to her. Mrs. Jones could
tell Hannah was a little nervous, so she
calmly said, “It’s okay. Here, say something
to Lily and I’ll translate.”

Hi. How are you?
Hannah slowly said, “Hi Lily. How are you?”
Mrs. Jones made a bunch of quick movements
with her hands, and Lily seemed to understand
because she made hand movements back. Mrs.
Jones responded, “Lily says thanks for letting
her sit next to you! She said she’s a little bit
scared to be in a new school because she
doesn’t know anyone.

Even though Hannah was still a little
uncertain, she said, “Tell Lily not to be
worried! She can sit with my friends and I at
lunch.” Once Mrs. Jones translated it, Lily’s
face lit up. She seemed so happy she had
made a friend!
