Lenny's First Day of School
By Haley Hultquist and Alexa Galas

In the Sandy Desert, Lenny the Lion grew up. Lenny
was a small, young lion cub. He played with his family
and always had fun. As he got older, he knew that one
day he would have to go to school. This frightened him.

Soon, the morning came for him to
walk to school. Lenny was very scared.
He gathered all of the courage he had,
and left for school.

When he got there, he saw
dozens of little lion cubs like
himself. They were all roaring
and playing with each other.
Lenny felt left out because
he didn't know any of the
other cubs.

The teacher, a old, wise, lion, came out and gathered all
of the little students. They walked in a single file line to a
small cave next to the pond, where their classroom was.
There were piles of school supplies near a window that
looked out into the desert. Lenny wished he could go play
outside.

“It is now time for music, class!” said the teacher lion.
The little lions lined up and walked to the music room.
Lenny sat down in the circle next to another cub.

“I’m Mr. Rawr, the music teacher and I’m going to teach
you all how to be musical young lion cubs. Let’s begin by
going around the circle roaring to warm up our voices,”
said the music instructor.

The cubs began to roar loudly, taking turns. When it
was Lenny’s turn, he let out a high-pitched screech. It
sounded like a chirp. All of the other lions started
laughing and pointing at Lenny. They all were saying
mean things to him.

“Was that a roar?”
“Lenny can’t roar like a real lion!”
“He’s a baby!”

“Be nice class. Music is now
over. You can all go to
recess!” shouted Mr. Rawr.

The class runs outside. All of the cubs start
playing with each other. Then, one lion gets an
idea, “Let’s have a roaring contest!”

Lenny wants to play with the others, so he joins the contest. Each
lion cub roars as loud as they can. Lenny covers his ears because
some growls are too loud.

ROAR!!!

Roar
ROAR

Screech!
“Lenny still can’t roar!”
“He sounds like a bird!”
When it is his turn, he takes a
deep breath and lets out
another high-pitched screech.
He turns back to the others
and sees that they are all
rolling around, laughing. Lenny
feels very uncomfortable.

All of the mean comments
made Lenny feel very sad.
He felt horrible! Everyone
was making fun of him
because he couldn't roar!
