There were many inventions in the civil war. I will talk about ten of them. They are; the Telegraph, Aerial Reconnaissance, Railroads, Army Ambulance Corps, Long Range Weapons, The Minie Bullet, The Gatling Gun, Ironclad Warships, Naval Mines, and Torpedoes.
The first one I will talk about is telegraphs. Samuel Morse invented telegraphs in 1844. They used mobile telegraph wagons to report and receive communications from just behind the front lines. President Lincoln would often visit the telegraph office to get the latest news updates. Telegraphs also allowed the news sources to report on what was going on in the war quickly to keep people updated.
The second one is Aerial Reconnaissance. Hot air balloons were used by both sides of the war for aerial reconnaissance of the battlefields. President Lincoln developed a balloon corps early on in the war. Balloon operators would also use telegraphs to let the commanders on the ground know of the enemies movements. This let them reposition their guns when needed.
Next, I will talk about the use of Railroads in the Civil War. This was the very first war to use railroads. They were important because they let soldiers travel fast. They also allowed supplies to be moved quickly. The North had better equipment and even had their own locomotive factory. But the South were the first to use railroads to their advantage for the civil war.
The Army Ambulance Corps is the next invention I will talk about. Jonathan Letterman was the first one to create the very first organized transport for wounded soldiers. Unfit soldiers usually made up the ambulance units. To this day, the military still bases its ambulance system off of Jonathan Letterman’s ideas.
Now, we will talk about Long Range Weapons. Before the Civil War all they had was smooth-bore Muskets. These could only go about 300 feet. Right before the civil war started rifling was invented. This meant that the bullets could now spin and go up to 900 feet. This made muskets much more accurate.
The Minie Bullet is the next invention I will talk about. Claude-Etienne Minie invented it in 1849. This made defense even safer. When it was used in the rifled musket it spun faster, went further, and was five times more accurate than any other weapon. The Minie Bullet caused the most battle wounds, more than 90%.
Richard Gatling invented the Gatling Gun. He had hoped since this gun was so deadly it would help end the war. Unfortunately, it only made the war more deadly. It is close to the machine guns we have today.
