Dedicated to Dr. Hayes in Scientific Inquiry

Tomorrow was the first day back to school since the new year and Tilly wasn't so excited to head back to 2nd grade. But a bad snow storm came into Tacoma, Washington that night. The news reporters said that school would be canceled for the next week. Tilly quickly became so happy!!

Tilly and her little sister Isla were looking so forward to playing in the snow tomorrow! They even hollered at mom that they would sleep in their snow suits!

All of the sudden Tilly heard her moms voice calling her into the kitchen. Tilly ran quickly to hear what she had to say.

Hi honey, how would you like to go to North Peak Slopes tomorrow with your sister and I?
Oh wow mom! Yes, I would love to.

That next morning Tilly ran into her little sister Isla's, bedroom as fast as her feet could carry her!

Yes, Tilly. I'm ready! Lets hit those slopes!
C'mon, c'mon, c'mon Isla! Are you ready yet??

The three of them spent the entire day at North Peak Slopes. But when it was almost time to go, Tilly had begun to look a little flushed and started to sniffle. Her mom put her hand to Tilly's forehead knew they needed to go home right away.
We need to head home! Tilly is sick!

When Tilly and her family got home, her mother checked her temperature, gave her some medicine and put her straight to bed. Tilly's little sister Isla was very confused what was happening to Tilly. And her mom's explanation didn't help much.

Mama, Whats wrong with Tilly?
Honey, Tilly has a very high temperature.
Mom can see the confusion on Isla's face when she talks about temperature. So she brings her into the kitchen to do a little science experiment.

Okay Isla, so lets measure temperature. First we have a pot of boiling hot water. Then we have a pitcher of ice cold water. Both of these can be measured with a thermometer. Water boils at 212 degrees fahrenheit while freezing happens at 32 degrees fahrenheit. Lets test it!

Isla's Mom had then to begin to explain to her that there are other ways you can measure temperature.
Isla, there are many other ways to measure temperature. You can measure the temperature of the weather. You can measure the temperature of our house from the fire in our living room. You can even a person's temperature like i did with Tilly a few hours ago!
Wow mom! We should go check hers again!
Later that night, Isla and her mom entered Tilly's bedroom and had begun to take her temperature. It had gone down! Mom had begun to tell Isla that if Tilly's temp was above 98.6 then she needed to stay in bed a bit longer.

Her temperature is 99.9. She needs more rest and medicine.
