What is culture?Culture is a way of life shared by groups of
people. Elements of culture can include, but
are not limited to, food, clothing, modes of
transportation, play, and a sense of family.
Culture gives us a sense of belonging. There
are both similarities and differences between
cultures across the world. In this book, we will
explore this using the Filipino and Piedmont
North Carolina cultures.

TerrainPiedmont North Carolina
The Piedmont of North Carolina is
located in the center of the state with
mountains to the west and the coast
to the east. It is home to rolling
foothills and fields full of crops.

Manila is the capital city of the
Philippines. It is on the island
of Luzon. Manila has a swampy
delta that falls between the
Pasig and the Pampanga
rivers. To the east are lowlands
and to the west are mountains
of the Bataan Peninsula.
Manila is an urban area that
fosters culture.

Together this symbolizes luck and prosperity.

In the Philippines, New Years Eve is very
important. You must eat pansit for long life.
Usually, you must find 12 round(ish) fruits
for the table to symbolize the months. You
need to open all the doors, windows,
drawers, and everything to allow good luck to
come into your house.

Piedmont North Carolina
The main mode of transportation in Piedmont
North Carolina's culture would be the use of
personal vehicles, which can include trucks,
vans, and cars.
