    The Coahuiltecan Indians were a community of hundreds of 

very small groups scattered across South Texas and Northeastern 

Mexico, including Coahuila, Mexico, a state. Where they lived, the 

climate was intensely hot, and they couldn't grow crops, and they 

were nomads, moving around their general living area.

Where did they live?

When Did they live?

    The Coahuiltecans lived at the general time of the 1500s to 

the early-to-mid 1800s. During their time, they encountered other 

tribes, some enemies, and the Spanish, arriving from Europe.

    This vase is a simple replica of what Native 

American pots and vases were like at the time.

What did they live in?

    The Coahuiltecans lived in nimble tree branches, draped 

over with animal hide. Their homes were essentially Teepees- 

however, these were not cones, but domes. 

    The Coahuiltecans lived in huts a lot 

like this one- however, this is only a replica 

showing the insides too- their huts were 

draped with a bit more more animal hide.

    The Coahuiltecans lived in huts similar of

How did they live?

    The Coahuiltecans usually preferred hunting and gathering over fishing and 

farming. Their regimen included ants and their eggs, worms, snakes, lizards, 

etc. people presumed the Coahuiltecans didn't use many tools, but some of 

the tools they did use comprised of bow and arrows, hammers, 

spears/javelins, knives, etc. to hunt, from small mammals to buffalo. To 

store items such as food or other small belongings, some Coahuiltecans 

hollowed out squashes and other gourds for the use.

    The Coahuiltecans hunted with tools 

similar to these.

        Squashes like these and other gourds were 

hollowed out for storage by the Coahuiltecans.

What did they hunt?

Some of the animals that were common to fall prey to the Cohuiltecan were 

buffalo, deer, javelinas- a small mammal very similar to wild pigs, and some 

other small mammals.
