The Apaches were native American Indians
who lived in the southwestern portion of the
United States of America. They were a
nomadic tribe, living in the areas we now
know as Arizona and New Mexico, as well as
Texas.

Where The Apache Lived

The Apache Ceremonial Ground Drum. The drum was
meant to bring excitement, solemnity, relaxation,
strength, courage, and fulfillment to tribal songs.

that the Apache men carried around on
a string going across their chest.
Apache Artifacts
The women raised the kids, cooked the food, made the
clothes, and gathered fruits, vegetables, and firewood,
along with grass so they could make baskets.
The Apache men from ten years old were trained for
fighting. Legend says - an Apache boy needed to run to
the top of a mountain before the sun rose each day to
get fit enough to pass into manhood.

battle and to hunt.

Apache's lived in many different
kinds of houses. They lived in
Hogans,Wickiups, and the
buffalo hide Tipi style house. The
most commonly used style for
apache houses was the Wickiup.

covered in brush.

Inside of a Hogan.
Hogans were made with a frame of logs
and sticks and usually covered with mud.
Hogans were one room dwellings that were
unique in the fact that they were classified
as male or female dwelling according to
their shape. A male Hogan was cone
shaped, while a female Hogan was a six or
eight sided dwelling.

Apache Religious ActivitiesThe Apache practiced a religion of great
spirits, elaborate dances and ceremonies.
The number four is sacred to them, they sing
all their songs and prayers in sets of four and
all rites last four nights.
The Apache Native American's ceremonies and
rituals include several dances. These are the
rain dance, to promote rainfall, and the
harvest dance in order to have a plentiful
harvest.
