Judaism

Abraham was the first Jew and, the founder of
Judaism.
2000 B.C.- God chose Abraham to be "father"
of the Hebrew People.
1800 B.C.- Abraham, his family and their
herds go to Canaan.
1650 B.C.- The decedent's of Abraham move
to Egypt.
1300 and 1200 B.C.- Hebrews fled Egypt they
call this" the Exodus"

Holy writings and guide lines:The roles of men and women were quite
separate in hebrew society.
Ten commandments were the code of laws
delivered to Moses.
Torah is the first five books in the Hebrew
bible, Jews consider the Torah sacred writings.

Beliefs/ Influence of BeliefsJews believe that to please God you must
study scripture and sacred writings.
Monotheism is the belief in worshiping one
God.

Christianity

Leader and BeginningsA jew named Jesus is the Christians leader.
6 to 4 B.C. Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
Age 30 Jesus began public ministry.
29 A.D. Jesus visits Jerusalem crowds were told he had
come to save the Jews.
3 days later he rose from the tomb.

Holy Writings and GuidelinesJesus taught Monotheism and the principles of the
10 commandments.
The bible is the Christan's holy book.
Gods personal relationship with each human being.
God would end wickedness.
An eternal kingdom.

Beliefs/ Influence of BeliefsPromised eternal life after death.
A personal relationship with a loving God.
The cross is the Cristian's symbol.

Hinduism

Leader and BeginningsThe world soul Brahman, was sometimes seen as having the personality of three
Gods: Brahma the creator; Vishnu, the protector;and Shiva, the destroyer.
750 to 550 B.C. Hindu teachers tried to interpret and explain the hidden meaning of
the Vedic hymns.
Hinduism is a collection of reliogous beliefs that developed slowly over a long period
of time.
Some aspects of the religion can be traced back to ancient times.

Holy Writings and GuidelinesPeople recited daily verses from the Vedas.
The teachers comments were later written down
and became known as the Upanishads.
Hindus today are free to chose the deity they
worship or to chose none at all, most however
follow a family tradition that may go back
century's.

Beliefs/ Influence of BeliefsThe Moksha is a state of perfect understanding of
all things, when a person understands both
Brahman and Atman they achieve Perfect
understanding or Moksha and a release from life in
this world. This usually doesn't happen in one life.
Reincarnation is rebirth of the soul or spirit again
and again until Moksha is atchived.

Buddhism

Leader and BeginningsThe founder of Buddhism is Siddhartha Gautama, known as Buddha the in
lightened one.
563 B.C. Siddhartha Gautama is born.
Siddhartha Gautama's Father kept him isolated in his palace to insure he
would be a great king.
At age 29 he ventured out of the palace four times.
483 B.C. Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) dies.

Holy Writings and GuidelinesThe four noble truths were four main ideas he had
come to understand in his enlightenment.
Eightfold path a guide to behavior, was like a
staircase. For Buddha those who were seeking
enlightenment had to master one step at a time .
Most often this would occur over many lifetimes.
By following the eightfold path anyone could reach
Nirvana the Buddha's word for release of
selfishness and pain.
