to my dog

I remember when I didn’t have a dog. I didn’t have many responsibilities, but the one day, about 5 years, that all changed. My mom said she was going on a surprise trip. I wanted to know every little detail about it! What was she getting? Where was she going? When would she be home? I didn’t know how long I could wait! When I heard the door slam shut, I finally relaxed because she was finally home...
I suddenly awoke at around 8AM and I wondered why my mom was awake and showered. So, I questioned “Mom, why are you up so early...and showered?” “It’s Saturday.”
My mom exclaimed, “Well, um, I'm going on a surprise trip, and you're staying here.”
Me being me, I said, "Why I want to come?”
As I suspected, she said, “No, you can't come because that would ruin the surprise.”
I was thinking to myself oh, well that makes sense. But my guess was that my mom was just buying clothes and didn’t want us to come.

Suddenly, my mom just left, and I was stuck at home. What was I going to do while I waited? Then I got a devious idea... a wide smirk spread across my face.
I went back to my room and started making plans to search the house. As I waited, I started doing a little snooping to get hints about what it was. I recklessly searched the whole house, I pulled clothes drawers and books from shelves, but I found absolutely nothing! Either my mom could hide things very well or she was, in fact, just buying clothes. I already had millions of shirts and clothes in general! A new pair of jeans would be nice though, I thought to myself. No, Kamryn, stop I told myself, back to the point. I clenched my fist and my face started to get red! I didn’t want to wait anymore! When I heard the door slam shut, I finally relaxed because she was finally home...

A smile spread across my face because the wait was finally over! As I waited for my mom to come downstairs because we were down there, my dad said “Jack, Kamryn, go behind the that one chair until your mom comes down.” As confused as I was, I listened, but I thought to myself why do we have to go behind the chair? As my brother and I waited, we anxiously talked about what it could be. Then we heard the thundering footsteps of my mom. Step by step they got louder and louder. As the footsteps got closer, my heart raced faster. Then I remembered that maybe all it was is clothes, a little frown filled my face.
Then my mom stated, “On the count of three you guys can come out. Three... Two... I thought to myself this is the longest three seconds of my entire life. “One!” my mom finally said. When that moment finally came, my heart felt like it skipped a beat! I hurtled over the chair, and what I saw was a little, white and tan ball of fluff! It was a puppy! My hands went to my mouth and sprinted over to the little fur ball. I gently picked her up and she felt like a feather. As soon as I looked into her big brown eyes, I knew she was mine until the end. I started screaming at my parents, “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” for as long as I could remember I had always wanted a dog and finally I got one! I was almost crying tears of joy.

After about 15 minutes of gushing over our puppy, we had to pick a name. I remember my brother exclaimed,” Let’s name her Rose!” My parents started laughing and I joined right in with them.
I said, “No, that’s dumb,” still chuckling at the thought. Then I was thinking about a name... Lu, no not Lu... Wait that’s it I thought to myself! Lucy! That’s the perfect name!
“How about we name her Lucy?” I suggested.
“That's a great name. The perfect name for our little puppy.” stated my mom with a smile.
“I agree. "said my dad, “Good choice.”
“Thanks” I said with a smile because I was happy, I chose the name and not my brother. That was her name, Lucy, and we never changed it. The next thing we had to discuss was the responsibilities of having a dog. Pretty much my parents just talked about how you have to play with her, put her in leash when she has to go out, and feed her... blah blah blah. I honestly didn’t care; I was just happy to finally have a dog.
