It was a cold day in January 2016, when my life changed forever. I was trying to get ready for school but just did not feel right. I had no energy and just wanted to lay down. My mom looked at my face and noticed it was sunk-in, pale, and I had dark circles under my eyes.

My parents knew something was wrong. They took me to the hospital in Dearborn. As soon as I got there, the nurse took me back right away. She told my mom that she knew what the problem was from my fruity smelling breath. Most likely, I had diabetes. The nurse tested my blood sugar and it was 460, normal blood sugar is 150.

The hospital I was at did not have the right doctors to help me as best as they could. So they decided I needed to go to the Beaumont Childrens Hospital in Royal Oak. Because it was about 45-60 minutes away, I had to be rushed by ambulance, that was my first ambulance ride.

This hospital was huge! The children's floor was actually really cool. The doctors and nurses could not have been more helpful and nice. They did not want us to leave until my parents knew everything they needed to know about how to take care of me from now on. Life as I knew it, was about to change.

I ended up spending about a week in the hospital. It was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. They had all kinds of fun stuff to do, they had Xbox's, Playstation's, Wii's, dvd's to watch, and a toy room with a huge library!

When we finally made it home I had to get used to a whole new way of eating, along with 4 shots a day. I have to test my blood sugar before every meal, then my mom or dad calculates how much insulin I need. Its hard not to be able to eat what I want, when I want. I've gotten more used to it over the years, but I still have bad days. When my sugar is low, I can have something sweet, which makes me happy.
