I am Poem: Dancing
I am a dancer
I wonder when the next competition is
I see shimmering costumes and bright spotlights
I want the performance to better than the last
I am a competitor
I pretend the nerves don't make an appearance
I feel the bruises and sore limbs
I worry I may disappoint my teachers
I cry when the season is over
I am an athlete
I understand dance paints a picture
I say encouraging words to my team
I dream of nationals
I try to inspire young dancers
I hope dance never ends
I am a dancer
I am Poem: Dancing
Response:
The reason behind writing the poem is because I have been a competitive dancer for 13 years and it is something I love doing. The poem shows some emotions that occur in class and at competitions. With the phrase, "shimmering costumes and bright spotlights" I wanted to show the things you would see as you watch dancers perform on stage. Also with the sentence, "dance paints a picture" I wanted to tell that dance it meant to be a story that unfolds while the performance is happening. I use personification when I say "nerves don't make an appearance" to show that the nerves never show up. I wrote this poem to share some of the experience of being at a dance competition.
Bio Poem: Raelyn
Raelyn
Quiet, helpful, hard-working, determined
Sister of Amanda and Matt
Lover of family, being on stage, and cheerleading
Who feels happy cheering, performing, and thankful
We needs to dance, be around friends, and at the beach
Who gives advice, help with hair, and car rides
Who fears birds, big bugs, and tall heights
Who would like to see Guam, Rome, and Japan
Resident of the Element Dance Center
Schoonover
Bio Poem: Raelyn
Response:
This poem is meant to show who I think I am as a person. I used the line "Resident of the Element Dance Center" to show that I am always at the studio and spend a good amount of my time with my team and teachers. And with the line "Quiet, helpful, hard-working, determined" I was showing how I view myself as a person. This poem is meant to give a little insight and information about myself and what I enjoy and do not enjoy in life.
Re-Creation Poem: Competiton Daze
Running around in costumes weighed down
With rhinestones, cheeks bright
With rouge, costumes bright against
Spray tanned skin,
Smiles started to form
Masking nerves, I smiled,
Pulling at my top, the final
Competiton planted new nerves
Time hissed past, we're next
Walking on we didn't say anything
Words are from Gary Soto's Poem "Oranges"
Re-Creation Poem: Competiton Daze
Response:
This poem is meant to show the final moments before going on stage at the final competition of the season. The phrases "bright with rouge," "with rhinestones," and "spray tanned skin" are to convey how the dancer looks when they are ready to compete. With "the final competition planted new nerves" I wanted to show that the last competition of the season made people nervous because it is the last one and the most important one. I used the line "pulling at my top" to also show that I was nervous for the competition and anxiously waiting for our number and group to be called on stage before we competed.
Stylistic Imitation Poem: A Day That Will Live In Infamy
At seven-fifty three in the morning
It was seven-fifty in the morning
Aircraft were sent on a mission to rain terror on beaches
at seven-fifty three in the morning
Pilots flew aimed at Oahu
at seven-fifty three in the morning
Soldiers dashed into action
at seven-fifty in the morning
Bombs rained on unsuspecting decks
at seven-fifty three in the morning
Machine guns rattled in retaliation
at seven-fifty three in the morning
Ships swam to the bottom of the ocean
at seven-fifty three in the morning
People rested inside them
at seven-fifty three in the morning
Planes tumbled from the sky
at seven-fifty three in the morning
Civilians lay lifeless in Oahu
at seven-fifty three in the morning
Aircraft vanish in the sky
at seven-fifty three in the morning
An eerie silence fell over the island
at seven-fifty three in the morning
War was now on the horizon
at seven-fifty three in the morning
Peace was ruined at seven-fifty three in the morning
Stylistic Imitation Poem: A Day That Will Live in Infamy
Response:
The setting of the poem is Hawaii and December 7, 1941, the day that Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The poem was written to show what happened on that infamous day. The phrase "ships swam to the bottom" was used to give the image of the ships sinking during the attack. When it says "civilians lay lifeless in Oahu" it was meant to show that soldiers were not the only people to lose their lives during the attack. The line "An eerie silence fell over the island" is personification and used to replicate the silence that followed the bombs deafening sound after the planes had left.
Definition Poem: Contentment
Contentment: [con-tent-ment] noun
A state of happiness and satisfaction
Sunlight dancing on my cheeks
The radio singing old songs
Rainy days spent indoors
Summer days turning into summer nights
Nights spent at the dance studio
Never ending competition days ending in first place
Warm blankets on bone chilling days
Dogs snuggling at my side
Time spent with family and friends
Definition Poem: Contentment
Response:
I wrote this poem to show things that made me happy and sparked joy in my life. When I wrote "Sunight dancing on my cheeks," I used personification to show that it was sunny outside. I was being dramatic when I said "Never ending days" to paint the picture that the days at the competition were so long that I thought they would never end, but were worth it in the end. I used the line "Warm blankets on bone chilling days" to make the reader feel the warmth from the blanket while hiding away from a cold day outside. This poem is meant to show some of the things that make me happy and give me the feeling of contentment in life.
Limerick Poem: London
There once was a man named Jordan
He lived in a place called London
Life was kind of bad
With his friend named Brad
They wished for the rain to be done
Limerick Poem: London
Response:
In this poem I was trying to show that two people living in London, England are displeased with the weather and wish for it to be done. The rhyming sequence in the poem and the amount of syllables in the poem is what makes it a limerick style poem. To make the poem a limerick the words "Jordon," "London," and "done" all had to rhyme, as well as "Bad " and "Brad" had to also rhyme with eachother.
