Dedicated to my family for accepting me and the
choices I've made, and to Jason, my best friend
and the greatest person I know.

Anna grew up in a very typical setting. She
lived in a nice house, in a nice neighborhood,
filled with nice people. She knew what it meant
to have a family. She looked at her parents
and saw a mother and a father, who loved
their child more than anything else in the
world. Anna realized that other people also had
similar families in their neighborhood, and that
they all looked very similar. Everyone looked
just like her.

Welcome Class!
When Anna went to school, she noticed that
not everyone looked like she did. There were
other children who weren’t white, and who
didn’t come from the same type of family that
she was used to seeing. This was confusing for
Anna to understand at her young age, but she
did understand one thing… No matter what
other people looked like or how different their
families were from Anna’s, they still had a
family.

Once Anna grew into a teenager, she could
finally comprehend what she had noticed at
such a young age. She knew that there was
such a thing as interracial couples and
interracial individuals who came from mixed
families. Although she didn’t see anything
wrong with this, she never saw herself
realistically starting a family with someone
outside of her own race. Her family also shared
these same views. They wanted their daughter
to be like them. They wanted Anna to stick to
her own kind.

JASON MASTERS!
Dating someone of another ethnicity wasn’t
something that Anna had ever considered
before. Until fate stepped in… When she wasn’t
looking, a boy by the name of Jason walked
right into Anna’s life and changed it forever.
Jason wasn’t what Anna had ever pictured
when she thought of a partner. He was
Dominican and African American, and an
aspiring musician. He came from a broken
family, and a very difficult past. He was the
complete opposite of everything that Anna had
always seen in her future, yet there was
something about him that she couldn’t ignore.

As their friendship blossomed, so did their
feelings for one another. Although it was
something completely unexpected, Anna didn’t
want to miss out on a potentially amazing
relationship solely based on what others
thought or felt was right or acceptable.

What will they think?
Anna knew that some people would judge her
and Jason, but she didn’t mind what others
thought of their relationship. The only approval
that was important to her was her families.
She was worried what they would think or say.
Would they be mad? Upset? Disappointed?
