Weather in WinterIn winter, the weather changes. If you live in
places like Wisconsin and New York, it gets
very cold and snowy. If you live in San Diego,
you'll notice it gets a little cooler, but it won't
snow and you won't need your parka.

Clothing in Winter

If you live where it snows and gets very cold, you
need to make sure you protect your body by
wearing the proper clothes. Hats, gloves,
mittens, scarves, boots, snowpants, and
wintercoats all help to keep you warm. Boots are
extra warm shoes that project you from getting
wet by the snow just like snowpants and your
winter coat.

Winter ActivitiesDuring the winter, many people take advantage of
the snow and ice to while they play outside. Many
people like to ski, sled, snowboard, ice skate, play
hockey, and snowshoe outside. If you don't live
where there is snow, you can take a vacation to
places that do have snow, like Big Bear, Mammoth,
and Colorado.

Holidays During WinterMany holidays fall during the winter season.
Christmas, Hanakkah, Kwanzaa, New Year's Eve,
Chinese New Year, and Valentine's Day are all
celebrated during this time.

What do animals do during winter? Some animals hibernate in a den, hollow, log, or burrow
during winter. During real hibernation, an animal's
breathing slows, and their body temperature drops.
(Almost to the temperature outside!) Animals hibernate to
get out of the cold season because there is no food for
them to find.
I hibernate during winter. That means I fall into a deep sleep-like state.

How can animals sleep all winter and stay alive? Before animals hibernate for the winter, they eat a great
deal of food. This adds to the body fat that they already
have. While the animals are sleeping, their body fat will be
their source of food. Some animals, like chipmonks and
groundhogs do wake up in winter to eat food that's stored
in their den.
Many animals have to choose a safe place to hibernate,
since it's easier for other animals to catch and eat them.

What animals hibernate?Bears, hedgehogs, bumblebees, raccoons, badgers,
chipmonks, ground squirrels, box turtles, bats, snakes,
marmots, earthworms, frogs, prairie dogs, and even bees
hibernate!
