The Trophy Mystery
Written and Illustrated by
Victoria Akwarandu
January 15th, 2006. Today was a boring day. It was hot, super hot. Yet Janice and I were still outside at the park on the swings.
“Yo Janice, wanna carve our initials on the willow tree?” I asked. “Jada, that’s for kids. Grow up.” She replied. I shrugged. Janice was always bossy. I decided to just follow her and go with it. Me? I always had a knack for solving puzzles like Sudoku. Janice? Well Janice is basically the miniature girl version of Sherlock Holmes. That’s why we formed something that’s called She’s a voracious problem solver.Your typical go-to-girl. She can do anything, she’s like, perfect! Me? Don’t worry about me. I’m just that regular nobody who sits in the corner and eats their cheap peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Not much about me. I’m not that intrepid, well-disciplined, perfect little girl from New York like Janice is. Sigh. So when finding out we had such talents, we decided to create what is now called “The Detective Girls” Boring, I know.
“Jada stop pondering already! Didn’t you hear what I said in the past 5 minutes!?!” Janice said. I paused for a moment. “...unicorns?” I replied. Jada fumed. “OH EM GEE JADA I SWEAR YOU NEVER LISTEN TO WHAT IM SAYING! HOW AM I SUP-” Janice stopped because her phone was ringing. “Holdon Jada it’s Zoey, we’ll argue later.” She said. Aight. Not that I care anyways. “Yeah Zoey, Sup. Case? Us? TROPHY?!? What? No. Oh yeah yeah. No you look like a dead rat. EXCUSE ME!?? DON’T YOU DARE CALL ME A ROACH YOU ROACH! Oh yea we’ll be there in 5.” Janice said that literally in a span of 30 seconds. Outstanding. “Zoey has a case. Her trophy is missing. Let’s go!” Janice said in a hurry and she took off running. “Wait up! I need to tie my shoe!” I exclaimed. “Freak your shoes! We got a case for the first time in 2 days!” Jada said from a distance. Sometimes she can be a real meanie, but who am I to tell her that? She is my only friend after all.

Jada steps aside and I pound on Zoey’s door. “Zoey! Open up! It’s Jada and Janice.” I said. I kept pounding until she finally opened the door. “Do you mind!? My baby brother’s sleeping. Come upstairs.” Zoey said as we followed her up the stairs into her room.
As soon as we entered, we plopped on her bed.“So, here’s basically what happened. Two days ago, I went to the hall of fame to glance at my beautiful big trophy that I attained at the singing contest, to regain my pride. So yesterday, when I went to go take my daily dose of pride, I found out that it was MISSING! Like, gone, missing. And I seriously do NOT know what to do??? Like what else am I going to use to regain my pride everyday!!??” Zoey said all in one breath.
“I totally understand you, sister! Ugh, I feel so bad!” Janice said. I showed an obvious look of indifference. “We’ll find who stole your trophy and we’ll get it back for you, Zoey! Right, Jada?” Janice said while slowly cocking her head to me. “Yeah. We’ll take the initiative and we’ll provide dedication to help you find your trophy.” I said blandly. “EEEEEE! Thank you girls! I owe you guys a big one!” Zoey said loudly. Cringe. Plus, I thought she said her brother was sleeping. Alright then.

I stepped outside of my house and took a big breath of fresh air. The sound of birds chirping and leaves rustling made me feel all warmzy inside. I then readied myself and walked across the street to where my school, Rutherfield Middle School was located. Sometimes I wish I wasn’t so close to school because everybody talks so loud I can hear their conversations millions of miles away. disturbs my peace. A millisecond before I stepped my foot into the school, Janice and Zoey get all up in my face. “Jada, we need to talk! Come with us, we’re going to the auditorium. Come on!” Zoey said as her and Janice escorted me. I tried my hardest to catch up with them because they were walking too fast. As we finally reached the auditorium, we walked inside.
“There it isn’t. My precious trophy. Stolen.” Zoey pointed. I walked forward, cautiously. I stepped up the steps and I examined the empty space. Something right below me then caught my eye. “I found something.” I said quietly. “What!? What did you find!?” Zoey said loudly as she ascended up the steps next to me. “I piece of paper. A small piece of paper.” I took out my tweezers and lifted it up. “It’s empty. No writing.” I said. “UGH JADA THAT’S NOTHING! HOW’S THAT GONNA FIND OUR CULPRIT! Give me that!” Zoey
