Introduction:
“Such dedication!”, said Ms. Henshaw. She was Jake’s writing and reading teacher. She was about his height because Jake was 17. Ms. Henshaw was 27 with long, brown hair. She was from Hispanic descent, but her English was really good. She barely had an accent. Good thing that they were past the Deport Era! She was complimenting his newest essay on wanting to find a cure to cancer. “You might even attain the Months’ Best Writer trophy!” Jake had done some
research and he found out that the cure to cancer was already being developed. He wanted to take initiatives for finding a faster cure to the common cold for now. The Wikipedia analysis showed him that cancer could occur anywhere on the body. Jake had read multiple variations of comics, some involving zombie viruses. Cancer was kind of like these viruses, which creeped Jake out more and more as he thought about it. Jake did enter his essay in the contest, and as he waited for the judges to rank his paper, the news was leaked in.
Chapter 1:
The TV was on, tuned in to a local Houston, Texas news channel where they were broadcasting two climbers ascending a sheer cliff with lots of security ropes and a flag to represent America. One of the judges, a fair skinned and old woman, went to a mic and reviewed the principles of the ranking. The lead judge got up, went to the mic, and said, “And Jake Farenson gets the trophy for...” All of a sudden, the TV Flashed bright green, like the reporter had poured DIY slime on the camera lens. The caption said: THIS IS A WARNING FOR EVERYONE AND SPECIFICALLY THE SLUM AREAS AROUND SHENZHEN, CHINA. THIS
DISASTER IS A CONTAGIOUS VIRUS THAT HAS LEAKED OUT OF A LABORATORY AND HAS ALREADY AFFECTED 15 PEOPLE. BE ADVISED. This message was followed up by a live report on the scene where the reporter was interviewing a scientist. The scientist said, “This virus infects people through the air as well as contact to open skin. The virus slowly dissolves the skin and organs, slowly eating victims away. The side affects will also change whatever is left of their minds to worship the ideas of biting and ripping up any other beings besides their own. People and animals can turn when exposed to the virus. The signs of infection or turning are: bite marks, irregular skin color, high fever,
unnatural sounds, foaming at the mouth-AARGH!”
The interview ended unexpectedly when a zombie creature grabbed the scientists’ arms and bit him. Jake watched in horror as the scientist grew twice his size, ripping his lab coat. His skin changed from slightly tan to greenish-yellow. The skin over his stomach dissolved, his kidneys and intestines spilled across the sidewalk and the reporter, who had fainted at first sight of the zombies. He looked at the camera man with a difference in his eyes, they had changed from intelligent, watchful ones to hungry and bloodthirsty ones. The elevation of the shot lowered as the camera man, screaming, dropped the camera and ran to his
van. For a second, everyone was quiet. Then, the auditorium exploded into frantic yells and running. Jake was awe struck. He had never thought that this could happen, but now, his greatest fear was live and breathing! He quickly got his stuff and rushed outside. Everything was the way it usually was, normal. This would be one of the last time Jake or anyone would see the world like this. He got in his car, a 3095 Camry. This was a two year old car, for it was 3097. He got in and peeled out of the parking lot.
He went to Falmart, a retail company and general store. He read a book series, The Last Kids on Earth and thought about what supplies the characters had
in the start. He went inside and ran to the bags. He hastily grabbed two suitcases and filled them with
more bags. He went to the hunting section and got two fishing rods with hooks, bait, and supplies. He got a machete and a hunting knife, along with a pocket multi-tool. He got extra ammo for his self loading sniper rifle from Boy Scouts target practice. He got a over load of dry food, canned food, water, juice(Which had a endorsement as the title.), medicines, first aid kits and other possible supplies that would be necessary for the End of the World.
the most enemy planes(7) in one minute. The channel had chosen him for his looks and keen attention skills that he acquired from his Air Force training. He also had lots of discipline from escorting multiple eminent people. He would persevere in every battle, so he held an imitation of an absolute professional. He was an intrepid pilot, so he was sent on multiple missions in uncharted territory. When Jake got bored, he turned off the TV and noticed that the house was quiet. "Oh", he realized, 'I left school early so my parents are at work! I have to warn them!" He reached for his phone, a super old iPhone 20, and dialed his moms’ number. When that didn’t work, He called his dad. No answer.
Chapter 2:
After checking out his $233 shopping, Jake went home. He fished in his pockets and found his keys. He went inside and turned the TV on. The channel it was set to featured political content, the usual multi-viewpoint arguments and propaganda. Today, it was about getting over the hurdle of this “virus” and the reporter, who was indigenous to China, looked dubious even as he saw the event unfold before him. He was probably around 33, with jet black hair slicked back with gel or oil. Jake then recognized the phenomenon, he was a retired pilot from the Chinese Air Force. He had broken the record for shooting down
He checked the house. The mudroom had light brown tiles and orange painted walls. The bedrooms all had queen-sized beds with red covers and blankets. The living room had black leather couches, a brown carpet, and a plasma flat screen TV. The kitchen had white tiles, a granite tabletop, a sink, and the regular dishwasher , stove, microwave oven, and a door to the backyard. Jakes’ parents were no where on the property.
Suddenly, Jake heard the radio cackle and the reporter said in a panicky voice, “The zombies from Shenzhen are spreading and now, the whole population of China is zombified. The zombies are evolving and every area of Asia now has at least 100 zombies. The zombies
,along with biting and eating beings, know how to do what they did as humans. So, for example, a zombified pilot can still fly a plane. These monsters are relocating around the world and they will very soon be at your front door!” Jake locked all the doors and, with plenty of nightmares, went to sleep.
The next morning, Jake got up early. As he was eating his wheat cereal, he heard a moan. A low, creepy sound that chilled him to the bone. He looked at the sliding glass door which led to the backyard and saw a thing. It had no skin, so the flesh was exposed. But even some of the flesh was taken apart, revealing the creatures’ bones and organs. Suddenly, Jake wasn’t
hungry. He noticed that the thing was carrying a bag with envelopes inside. And it had a ragged ID tag on its’ collar. Then Jake realized that the thing was the mailman, Mr. Nelson. Jake looked over the mailmans’ shoulder and saw a whole horde of zombies. Some had no heads, some were eye-less, some were missing limbs, and some had no skin, flesh, or organs. They were all making a horrible sound, like someone having their body taken apart limb to limb. Jake went to every window, and all he saw were crashed cars, zombies, broken houses, zombies, felled trees, and more zombies.
He took all of his stuff to his upstairs room. He got
duct tape, rope, chains, sandbags, furniture, and anything he could find and blocked every door and window strategically. Good, he thought, Now I don’t need to watch for zombies downstairs. Lets set up upstairs. Jake was still in shock as he worked. When he was five, Jake and his dad built a tree fort. They installed bottle rocket launchers and a shallow moat. Now, since Jake learned chemistry, he could advance the mechanisms and defend his home. Since his dad was a chemical engineer, Jake had access to a lab and chemicals. He made bombs, bullets, and rockets made out of explosive chemicals. Then, he made the moat deeper and filled it with water. He added some
chemicals that would burn up anything on contact. He added a rope bridge that connected the house to the fort. Finally, after the food and bombs, Jake brought up his automatic self-loading mag. Sniper rifle and put the poison bullets in the magazines. He was set for the zombies.
A Few Weeks Later:
Chapter 3:
Jake went through the week slaying endless zombies and at night, he pondered on the idea that there could be a cure to the zombie virus. He finally decided that he would be the one to find the cure. He got supplies, like knives, sharp rocks, and spears and attached them to his dads’ truck. He soon had a big Ford pickup truck with spikes everywhere and a big trailer. The trailer was a flatbed with half of it being a cage and the other half being a weather-proof tent with supplies inside. The supplies included his gun, a machete, a first-aid kit, food, water, ammo, bombs, and multiple tools and
traps for handling and catching animals or zombies.
He got lost soon and didn’t have a map. At this point, the world was totally broken. There was no people or food. Jake was down to his last rations. He really needed to find supplies and people fast. Jake had brought his radio, so he found an antennae and waited for some sound. Finally, through the static, he heard a voice that said, “Come to the central Sheriffs’ office.” Jake hopped in to his car and drove there as quickly as he could. On the way, he stopped at his friend, Freds’ house. Turned out that Fred was alive and he got in with Jake. “So, Jake, how are you? Its’ been pretty crazy, right?”, he asked. “Yeah, its’ been
nuts, but I made it. We’re going to to the Sheriffs office because I picked up a radio signal from there. They might have food!”, replied Jake. Fred looked at Jake. “So you don’t have any food?!” Jake shook his head. Fred slapped his forehead and groaned. When they arrived, they got on top of a hill next to the station. They spied on the survivors and noticed that they were fine with newcomers.
They approached the gates. Sergeant Ben Cuberson welcomed them. “You can come in and leave the vehicle. The others inside will help and feed you in exchange for information.”The pair nodded and went inside. There was a moat and spikes, along with
mounted machine guns and rocket turrets. They entered the building and saw a big armory. Two volunteers, who said that there names were Phil and Terran, gave them assault rifles and some soup. Terran spoke first. “So, where are you guys from?” Jake cut Fred off, because he knew how socially awkward he was. “We’re from Maverick ISD. We saw the zombies in our area and we ran. I had a radio so I heard you guys calling all survivors in. Don’t do it anymore, because some of the zombies are smart enough to understand what you are saying and do it!” Suddenly, an idea popped in to Jakes’ head. “Hey, can you take care of Fred while I go out to find a cure to the virus? If you guys have a pharmacist or a chemist
here, I can take them to my dads’ lab and they can find a cure for this virus!” Phil pondered on the idea. “ We do have a scientist that specializes in viruses. His name is Dr. Kaden. We don’t have the supplies necessary to make the cure, but your lab sounds fit for the job! I’ll alert Dr. Kaden and get someone to equip you with everything you’ll need.” Jake smiled to himself. This was great! Now, he could put an end to this living nightmare! A few minutes later, Dr. Kaden appeared from around a steel wall. He looked 50 years old, with a white, short beard and spectacles perched on the edge of his nose. He was from England, as Jake could tell from his accent when he said, “Well hello
