This book is inspired by one of my favorite authors ...... Kate DiCamillo, and is dedicated to my siblings Isabella and Juan Pablo.

Hello! My name is Baxter and I’m lost. My owner Katy and I went on a camping trip in the vast forests of North Carolina this weekend. Seems like my owners left me behind by accident(please just let me believe this). This morning I pondered about how I would survive and attain food resources, because even though I’m from a wolf descent I pretty much suck at survival techniques.
During my desperate search for food I imitated a wolf, and tried to remember the principles of hunting. I surmised that I could use a variation of methods like hiding and waiting, going straight for my target, or just simply giving up and dying. After concluding the results from my analysis I decided to hide and wait since I did not know anything about hunting. I fumed when nothing appeared, so I left and ascended a nearby hill to acquire a better view. I could clearly see the ginormous sheer
mountains and the colorful heartwarming sky with almost pure white clouds in between, while the sun smiled down at me giving his last breath before it went to sleep.
After a while, I just gave up and followed the path back to the campsite, but as I strolled I heard something. Not just something..... footsteps. I felt the light footsteps right behind me, but I was not intrepid like other dogs so I just kept walking. Minutes later, I finally decided to stop and turn around.
While I watched my surroundings I spotted this unusual creature dashing around the intimidating trees. The unknown creature casually stopped and blended into the darkness until I could only see its ember like eyes. We stared at each other for a long period of time. For a moment I thought we started a staring contest or something like that. Unexpectedly they charged at me.
I soon determined that the critter was a male squirrel! Not an alien or a creature that could eat me with just one bite as I expected. I bet he tried to figure out what kind of bizarre animal he faced. After he finished examining me he stepped back and introduced himself.
“Hi, my name is David. I am indigenous to this forest and represent this area as the #1 ranked tourist guide. In comparison to other squirrels I have discipline and some dignity. I don’t want to be weird, but I followed you all day long and realized that you might need some assistance when talking about direction. I would gladly help you if you want.”
Of course I was dubious. I mean I barely knew him. He seemed like a nice guy, so I let him escort me to his house. I did not totally confide in him, but I did not have a choice.
We slept in his tree house, because darkness had already arrived. At first I could barely sleep, because I could not stop thinking about Katy. The rain that poured slightly touched my white fur as I thought. I still could not believe she left me! Questions accumulated and multiplied inside my head as I stared at the blackness of the sky.
Honestly, I was extremely agitated. I did not know if I would ever reach my home. Even though I had a roof on top of my head(well a ton of leaves)thanks to David I missed Katy and my own comfy bed. I did not know what to do. Eventually, the consistent calming sound of the rain took me to sleep.
The next day I woke up and set a goal for myself. “Don’t give up and persevere!”I knew that with dedication I could accomplish my goal, but I swear I did not know if I had any. I habitually eat my beef flavored dog treats in the morning, but not today.
Today I had blueberries from a bush nearby. Even though they smelled like the trashcans in my back yard I had no choice. I preferred eating the berries than dying of hunger. David woke up and told me to get ready for the big trip.
As we wandered through the slums nearby the forest we spotted a pack of wolves digging through some trashcans. I wanted to talk to them, but David stopped me and dragged me to the safety of the dark shadows. “Are you out of your mind!?!”he whispered.
“That wolf over there in the center is Luis. One of the most voracious hunters in these lands. You absolutely don’t want to mess with him.” Even though I knew I had wolf descendants I also knew David did not play.We decided to get pass them.
Instead we failed. Right after we entered the forest again, my instincts told me to rotate. I saw a gigantic wolf throwing his body over me. I evaded the attack and ran with David until we reached a dead-end. A river in front of us blocked our way.
David and I could not cross the deep river. I mean the river had a strong current which flowed at the speed of light. Obviously, the river could overthrow any type of animal. We feared death approached.
To our left and right 15 or more wolves appeared. None of them approached us, but Luis who looked like the alfa. He was the tallest and probably the strongest of them all. He also had a spiteful personality. As he walked toward us he literally spit on David’s face!
