Once upon a time, there was a little girl named 

Penny. She lived in a small village in the kingdom 

of Suluclac.

One day, her mother sent her out to the Market of 

Suluclac to buy dresses for the next ball. 

The Market of Suluclac had booths, but there was one 

especially that had caught Penny's attention. 

An elderly couple manned a small booth in the corner 

with a single table filled with an assortment of things.

But what caught Penny's eye, however was not on the 

table.  

Behind the couple was a beautiful, pink dress that 

gleamed in Penny's eyes. 

Penny adored the color pink. It was her favorite 

color. The moment she set her eyes on the dress, 

she knew it was the one. 

Penny continued forward to the booth with the 

intent to buy the dress.

Penny's mother gave her $20 to buy her dress, 

but as Penny approached the dress, she saw that 

the dress cost $25!

Penny was sad and started to walk away 

dejectedly. 

But the old lady called out to her.

Did you see the sale we're having?" She smiled. 

"Everything is 30% off!"

Penny was confused. What did that mean?

George the Mathematician Wizard, famous for his 

magic problem-solving skills, overheard the 

conversation and decided to help Penny.

A smile broke out on Penny's face when the Wizard 

came to her rescue. Surely he would know what to do!

George the Mathematician Wizard greeted Penny and 

the old lady and asked what was the problem.

"The problem is that I'm confused when Mrs. Nook 

says everything is 30% off!" Penny explained. Mrs. 

Nook had to help her husband with another 

customer, but told Penny to get her if she figured 

everything out.

The Wizard nodded and smiled. "Well, dear Penny, 

we can easily solve this problem using my four step 

plan!" he exclaimed. 

He opened his spell book and read the first step. 

"Step 1: Understanding the problem. Well, that's easy!  

What are you going to find?"

Penny thought for a moment. "Oh! I'm going to find 

my total cost after I take 30% off of $25!"  

"Great job, Penny! Now," he flipped the page. "The 

next step is to make a plan."

This step puzzled Penny for a while, but then she 

remembered something she learned in math class. 

"I'll make a two-step equation!" she exclaimed.

George the Mathematician Wizard conjured up a 

pencil and paper, and Penny wrote down the equation 

"25 - (25 x 30%) = T." 

The Wizard flipped the page once more and read the 

next step aloud. "Step 3: Carry out the plan. Go ahead, 

Penny!"

Penny worked out the equation she had made. "30% 

of 25 is 7.5," she thought. "And 7.5 subtracted from 25 

is...."

A smile broke out on Penny's face.
