Compare and contrast the experience of reading a story, drama, or poem to listening to or viewing an audio, video, or live version of the text, including contrasting what they "see" and "hear" when reading the text to what they perceive when they listen or watch.
Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g., stories and poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics.
Creative uses
I would use this to allow my students to think outside the box and add their own spin to literature. I would also use this to compare (in this case “fairy tales”) and have students discuss what they see and hear in the different stories.
Students will “Modernize” a traditional story or fairytale for the 21st Century. They will compare and contrast their modernized story to a traditional story of their choice.

Once upon a time there lived a little girl named cinderella. She was beautiful and admired throughout her community. She had many friends and was very popular in school. She had it all! Beauty, brains and even the boys! She was the only child and got her way most of the time because she lived with just her dad and he worked a ton of hours to support their family! Cinderella’s mom remarried and moved to Chicago when she was 5 so it was just her and her dad, which she loved! He was very supportive! She played soccer and he made every single game, no matter how tired he was. He was her biggest fan and even sat in the same spot every game

Friday night was like any regular old Friday. Cinderella had a game and she looked for her father to be in his spot, but he never showed. She was worried especially when she called and didn’t get an answer. After the game she raced home to look for her father, but he was not there! She sat at the end of her bed confused and worried sick. That’s when she received the devastating call and it changed her life forever.

Her father had fallen asleep at the wheel and crashed into a tree on the way to her game and was in critical condition at the local hospital. She rushed to his bedside and cried for hours. Unfortunately, her nightmare was not over. Because she was a minor and her legal guardian, her father, could not care for her she had to go into child protective services. She was swept away from her father’s bedside and thrown into the system. She was miserable! She could not bring any of her things due to lack of space and even had to transfer schools. Things were not the same anymore. She was lonely, sad and she did not have her best friend anymore, her father.

Her confidence fell and she wasn’t the popular kid she once was. She spent a total of 46 days in a group home before being placed into a home. She thought “finally” a good home. This lady was known for fostering and had 2 girls of her own. She was hopeful that the transition would be easy! Oh boy! was she wrong. The two sisters were very mean to her! They pulled her hair, called her horrible names, stole her clothes and even lied to their mom about her behavior. This made the mother treat Cinderella very. She made her sleep in the broom closet and clean behind their every move. She dressed in rags and was never allowed to get her hair done like her foster sisters. She had to come straight home every day to complete her chore list. She was so sad.
One day while at school she saw a piece of paper hanging on the gym room door. It was a soccer try out signup sheet, she got super excited! She thought she could have a piece of her life back by doing something she enjoyed but just when she got excited, she noticed she needed a parent signature to try out. She knew her step mom would never say yes but she asked anyways. And just like she expected she was told no! Cinderella just cried. Nothing was going right! She couldn’t see her dad, she was being treated terribly and she couldn’t play the one sport that made her happy! She was ready to give up.
