One type of characteristic of savannas is that they are a type of grassland biome. They have grass and trees, making them a rolling grassland, and the trees and shrubs are scattered. The rainy season which is in summer rains 15-25 inches of rain. The dry season in winter, however, only rains a few inches. There are large herds of animals and grazing animals who thrive abundance in trees and grass. Savannas are usually warm. Cools down during the dry season, and warms up in the rainy season.

Characteristics

Savannas are generally found between deserts and rainforests biomes. They are mostly located near the equator. The largest savanna is in Africa, Half of Africa is covered in savanna grasslands. Other major savannas are in South America, India, and Northern Australia.

Major Savannas

There are many types of grass in savannas, lemongrass, Rhodes grass, star grass, and Bermuda grass. Trees have many, too, which are acacia tree, baobab tree, and jackalberry tree. For surviving droughts and the dry season, some plants store water and energy in their roots, bulbs, or trunks. Also, some plants’ roots go so deep they reach the water table.

As a result of savannas having a lot of grass and trees, many herbivores love and congregate in herds. Some herbivores from a savanna are buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffes, elephants, ostriches, and gazelles. Predators are lions, hyenas, cheetah, leopards, and blank mambas. Cheetahs can catch prey as they are the fastest land animal which can run at 70 miles per hour. Giraffes can scout and spot animals from distances. Ostriches and gazelles can run for they are fast, too.
