MY HEART GOES OUT
TO MICHAEL SPRIGGS!!
KEEP WRESTLING!!

"Pin him Michael!!" hollered my mom.
"His feet are lined up with yours, go
for his feet!" yelled my coach, telling
me what to do.

I have dreams, just like all of you! Go
to the Olympics, wrestle better than my
older brother, Timmy. I work at my
dream of wrestling. My coach teaches
me everyday. Every new wrestling move
at a time. But unlike all of you, I have a
much harder time at learning new
moves, I am a blind wrestler!

I was born with Cataracts and Glaucoma,
making me only able to see shadows
and outlines of objects, people, or
whatever I was staring at.

My parents made me have surgeries
to see if I would be able to see a little
better. Within the first 5 months of my
life, I already had 6-7 surgeries.

We have been in surgeries
6-7 times!!!

My parents decided it would be better
to enroll me into a school for the blind.
I started in August of 2006!

My name is Michael!
Those other people are
my friends!!!

One day while I was swimming at
school, somebody accidentally poked
me in the same eye I just had surgery
on to try and save.

OUCH!!!!

While I was at the hospital, recovering
from being poked in the eye, I met Brody. He
was the most awesome person I have known,
even though I don't know what he looks
like!

Brody and I became the best of friends.
The best thing he ever did for me was
telling me not to quit wrestling. I
thought I was the worst at it because I
couldn't see where my opponents were.
He told me I was the best he has ever
known. Even though he couldn't actually
watch me, I knew he could see me in his
heart!!

Without Brody, I would not be where I
am now. I would've quit and never tried
to learn more techniques. I didn't let
blindness stop me!

My coach was mad at all of the wrestling tournaments
because my opponents knew I was blind but
didn't care and always went for my legs. So
my coach did something about it, he
asked the wrestling coordinator in EACH
tournament I was in, if they could make
a new rule. You can't lose contact during
the match, if you do lose contact, you stop
and reposition. They agreed!!!

Another reason I'm happy Brody kept
me wrestling is because I went 27-11
in one of my tournaments. He encouraged me to keep
going on my dream of wrestling, and I thank him for
that!

But one day, while I was at a wrestling
tournament, my mom told me Brody
started to have headaches. He was
rushed to the hospital and was having
severe head surgery for bleeding in the
brain.

I went straight to the hospital after
getting 2nd place in my wrestling
tournament. I learned that he had just
gotten out of surgery. But that wasn't
the worst part, the surgery was
unsuccessful, he had died 30 min
before I got there. I never got to say
goodbye.
