Once upon a time...

There was once a home called “The Ocean”.

At this home we produced the majority of the oxygen, we had an important food source, it regulated the climate so there wasn't too much heat or cold in the habitats.

On that day, two colourful fish with shining scales were swimming swiftly in-between corals, going towards a school of fish gazing at the reflection of the sun in the water...

- Uh, uh what’s this?

-What do you mean?

Chapter I

- Someone threw a plastic bottle at me!

Sea waste is a big threat to the ocean. Plastic is very resistent, so it lasts for a lot of time. If Mankind isn’t careful, all of it will end up in the sea, lakes and rivers.

-We have to teach humans a lesson! The other day I had to ask my friend, the crab, to help me out of

a fishnet that the fishermen had left behind.

- Can you see this hole over here? I almost

left half my scales in there!

-Uh, you must be feeling so cold!

It’s so unfortunate that we don’t have a sewing machine to fix your clothing!

-We must act! You understand our challenge, don’t you?

-Okay, let’s go! I suggest an activity to clear all doubts "Garbage or animals"?

-Well Did you know that the garbage found at sea is 80% plastic? This turns its presence there more and more common everyday.

-That’s true! And it takes longer for it to disappear than me!

- For it to decompose it takes about 100 to 150 years, while all I need is to catch a virus! There are a lot of sea animals threatened by sea waste ingestion and that threatens us all! The litter affects our whole food chain.

-Do you know what I ingested last week after finishing my dinner of juicy medusas? – asked the sea turtle – a plastic bag, thinking it was a new kind of jellyfish!

The octopus had already finished his nap and went for a walk around having to divert from some garbage – plastic, lost nets, fishing material, glass bottles roped in nets sometimes wire cables.

At a certain point...

-Oh neighbour Turtle!! Neighbour! Don’t eat that!

-In no time you’ll have your tummy full of garbage, won’t feel hungry, won’t eat more and you know what’s your end don’t you?

So, remember that :

Microplastics are particles with less than 5 mm which were once part of bigger particles and very hard to identify and collect. These particles are transferred from the animals’ digestive system to the circulatory system. Besides the toxicity in these particles, the main organs are also damaged, like the heart and the liver. Smaller animals mistake them for food. They get into their food chain and that's why they start threatening all sea life.

To help you understand this process of the food chain, we ask you to look at the image on the right, take some time to think about it.

   - Oh no, we are late for school! – said the turtle.

  - Yes, you are right, the teacher is going to get angry! – exclaimed the blue fish.

   - Hurry up! – said the golden fish, as he started to swim faster.

   When they entered the classroom, all their classmates were already there. The teacher, Ms Tentacles, a really sapient octopus, got upset with them, but then the golden fish said:

   - It wasn’t our fault! Someone threw me a plastic bottle!

Chapter II

- Oh, I’m glad you started talking about that. Today´'s topic is pollution, too!   

  - Well, and that´s not all. For us, it is not new that the human actions have horrible consequences in the ocean, in our home. But it´s not just the plastics. In different parts of the ocean, this human pollution has different consequences, and each one more devastating than the other. To show you that I have planned a school trip to the Antarctic Ocean this weekend, so you can see how pollution is affecting our beautiful home.

  - YEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

   The whole class got immediately thrilled and they couldn’t wait for the weekend to come.

When the long-awaited day arrived, all the students were really enthusiastic. The teacher couldn’t make them quiet enough to mount the manta ray and start the trip.   

At the beginning of the path, they were really excited, but then they quickly got scared, because along the way they started to see a lot of terrifying things, such as seals with their necks cut by plastic threads, penguins trapped in fishing nets and all kinds of animals suffocated in plastic bags.

When they arrived, they started the tour near the glaciers. What a wonderful view! The teacher started talking about the thaw and explaining why it was happening:

   - Do you see these glaciers? Well, since 1950 they have been melting. And why? Because of human irresponsibility. The human being is emitting large quantities of carbon dioxide, among other gases, causing a greenhouse effect, by increasing the temperature, and as a result glaciers have been melting. This has a lot of negative consequences in our lives, in all the lives in the ocean, actually. The melting of the glaciers will change the temperature and the currents of the oceans, many marine species will have to change their habitats and some of them can become extinguished.

Furthermore, many ecosystems can even collapse because of this.

 The students got horrified. It broke their little hearts to see that the ice was melting, and that the home of many animals was fading away from under their flippers.

   As the time went by, the golden fish noticed that the turtle wasn’t there. So, he decided to look for her. Some time later, he found his friend trapped in a fishing net. She wasn’t capable of getting rid of it!

When the golden fish finally rescued the turtle, they realized that the rest of the group was no longer there.

   - We are lost! – said the turtle, really scared.

   - What are we going to do now? – wondered the golden fish.

The turtle and the golden fish didn’t know what to do. They were so scared! What if they couldn’t find the rest of the group? Or what if they found themselves trapped in a fishing net again?

-We must find our way back quickly or we are never going to find the group again! – said the turtle, very worried.

-You’re right. I think we came from that way... Come on, let’s go! – exclaimed the golden fish.

The turtle and the golden fish started the way back to the group. The truth is that the golden fish didn’t actually know if they came from that way but he didn’t want to worry the turtle even more.

As they were trying to find the way back, they saw a seahorse crying. It seems like he was lost too. So the turtle and the golden fish decided to go see if he needed some help.

-Are you okay? – asked the golden fish.

-Oh I didn’t notice you were there... I came from the Atlantic Ocean and I got lost! – said the seahorse.

-We’re from the Atlantic Ocean too! We came with our class and got lost of the group. We’re trying to find our way back... You can come with us if you want to! – suggested the turtle.

-Really? Thank you so much! – appreciated the seahorse.

-We must go now, it’s getting late! – warned the golden fish.

So the three of them kept swimming for a long time but they still couldn’t find their way back. When they were about to give up, they saw a huge, old turtle going into their direction.

-I guess none of you knows

where you are... – wondered Sally.

-Who are you? – asked the golden fish.



-Let me introduce myself. I’m Sally, the oldest turtle alive. I know every ocean of the planet. Where do you guys want to go? – asked Sally.

-Nice to meet you, Sally! We are lost... we need to go to the Atlantic Ocean! – explained the turtle.

-Don’t worry, I’ll take you there. Come with me. – said Sally.

They couldn’t believe they were finally going back!

As Sally was showing them the way, the turtle explained to her all about how she got trapped in the fishing net and all that she learned with her teacher about the consequences of the irresponsibility of the human actions and how animals like their new friend, the seahorse, are becoming extinguished because of that.

-You know, it’s true that sometimes the humans don’t think about the danger they are putting us in with the pollution. But, did your teacher already told you the good things humans are doing about that? – asked Sally that already knew the answer.

-No, he never told us about the good things. – said the turtle.

-Well, there are humans that are trying to correct what other humans have already done. – said Sally.

-Really? Like what? – asked the seahorse a little surprised that the humans aren’t all bad.

-For example, there are companies like Adidas that are taking the plastic from our home to do some shoes for them. Can you believe that? – asked the wise turtle.

-I never imagine that could be

possible! – exclaimed the golden fish.

-And it’s not just shoes. They are making other things like products, accessories and clothes. Do you see these scratches in my shell? The other day, I was trapped in a fishing net, just like you. And I wasn’t capable of getting rid of it. And you know who helped me? – asked Sally.

-Who? Who helped you? – asked the turtle really curious about Sally’s story.

-A human. Yes, it’s true. They found me and they took the fishing net out of me. At first, I was afraid too. But then I remembered that there are very good human too.

-And you need to remind that. – said Sally.

-That’s amazing! We’re never going to forget that! – exclaimed the golden fish.

Sally continued to guide those little three friends for a little longer. As they were starting to recognize where they were, the three of them kept thinking about how strange it was that nobody ever told them about the good things humans do and how good it is to know that there are humans that are trying to help taking all the plastic away from the ocean.

-I already know where I am! – exclaimed the seahorse. Thank you so much for your help! – He said to the golden fish and the turtle. And I am never going to forget what you told us! – He said to Sally.

Suddenly, the turtle and the golden fish saw their school. They couldn’t believe they had found their way back! Well, with a little help...

-That’s our school, Sally! – said the golden fish.

-Alright guys, it was nice to meet you all! Be careful! And remember, not all humans are bad! – said Sally.

-We’re never going to forget that! – said both of them.

When they went to the classroom with the rest of the group, they were so excited to tell everyone what they learned with Sally!

But before they had the chance to explain, the teacher said... (ready for the next chapter?)

Chapter III

3rd Gymnasium of Heraklion Crete

Irakleio, Kritis, Greece

“Well, it was about time you showed up! You found your way back at last. And guess what. You arrived just in time I was going to start informing all of you about the latest news of marine species across the globe.

Have you heard of the latest tragedy under water? Fifteen Mediterranean Risso’s dolphins have washed up dead on the Mediterranean south-western shores of the island of Crete during last month. Cause of death: plastic found in their stomach. What a terrible and unfair way to die!” 

Every student was shocked and speechless. 

“What is even worse”, the teacher continued, “is that more and more dolphins die in many parts of the world, not just in Greece, and this alarming rise of dolphin deaths is linked to plastic pollution of the sea”.

The students remained silent. 

“So, as you can understand the constant threat of marine life is not just in the Atlantic, but it is rapidly spreading every where across the planet”, said Ms Tentacles.

“Such a waste of marine life!” whispered the golden fish while the turtle sighed. 

“So, let’s see what we know about the dolphins, those unique, intelligent creatures of the ocean, the holy animals of Apollo and Poseidon as well as a symbol of friendship and solidarity according to Plutarch, that will always have a special place in human heart. 

Plutarch believed that to the Dolphin alone, beyond all other, nature has granted what the best philosophers seek - friendship for no advantage.

Also, dolphins appear often in Greek mythology”, informed the teacher.

“Really? We love stories. Could you tell us a dolphin myth, please, Ms Tentacles?” asked the whole class.

“All right, just one quick story, if you insist...

According to the Greek myth, a dolphin saved the life of Arion of Lesbos, a famous lyre player. 

Arion was sailing back to Greece after a concert tour of southern Italy when the sailors on the ship plotted to kill him and take the money he had earned. Surrounded and trapped, Arion asked them to let him sing one last song. The sailors allowed this, and Arion’s music drew several dolphins to the ship.

As he played, the dolphins swam alongside the ship and Arion decided to take a leap of faith and jumped overboard. One of the dolphins carried him safely all the way back to Greece”.

“Amazing! What a great story!” agreed everybody.

“Enough with stories. Let’s focus on facts.

So, who would like to share some interesting information about these playful, sociable mammals with the rest of the class?” the teacher asked.

“They breathe through their lungs and what is really amazing is that their brain is as complicated as the human one”, said the golden fish.

“They can store enough oxygen allowing them to swim for 20 whole minutes at a depth of 500 meters!” added the turtle.

“A sound- detecting system in their head allows them to find easily their way around, to spot their food and to communicate”, said the golden fish. 

“That’s right, they have their own codes of communication and very good orientation indeed”, agreed the teacher.

“Unlike the golden fish that gets lost every now and then”, said the rest of the class.

“I know this, because once I was lost in the deep dark ocean and a dolphin helped me to find my way back to my family.

I remember I was in danger, completely lost, scared and exhausted and this dolphin carried me back to my family. We became good friends and the dolphin keeps coming back to see me often. They are such loyal friends!” said the golden fish.

“And clever too. They can even save human lives! They can rescue sailors in danger. 

Do you know that they never actually sleep? They just put the two hemispheres of their brain to sleep in turn so that when the one rests, the other continues to operate and secures breathing”, informed them the teacher.

“Oh how I envy those unique creatures!” said the blue fish. “Have you noticed the perfect aerodynamic shape of their body? While I look fat and ugly. And their hearing and visibility are incredible!”

“And have you seen the way they jump and play with the waves? I think I envy them too. I wish I were as fast as a dolphin”, added the turtle.

“Dolphins are precious indeed! They help maintain the balance in the sea ecosystem, as they eat the unhealthy fish”, the teacher explained. “They are so full of graces: intelligence, strength, vitality, affection, altruism that even humans envy them. 

However, we should remember that every single creature is worthy of respect, as every creature no matter how humble has his role to play in the chain of life, in the endless circle of life.”

The students remained silent for a while, after their teachers’ last statement.

“I didn’t know there were dolphins in the Mediterranean Sea of Greece. I thought they lived only in the Atlantic Ocean”, said the golden fish to break the sudden silence in the class.

“Of course they do, although they are in danger nowadays. The relationship of Greeks with dolphins in particular is as old as time.

Homer’s scripts, the Minoan frescos in Crete and Santorini, ancient coins depicting dolphins as well as a lot of myths and legends highlighting the relationship between human beings, Gods and dolphins are the biggest proof!” explained the teacher.

“How interesting!” said the golden fish in surprise!

“In fact in Greece inhabit four dolphin species, out of the 32 encountered all over the world: Risso’s dolphin, striped dolphin, bottlenose dolphin and common dolphin. In Greece, we can also observe a unique phenomenon: the Corinthian Gulf is the only place on earth where the striped dolphins mate with Risso’s and common dolphins!

Also, in the Corinthian Gulf you can observe the smallest striped dolphins on earth!” continued the teacher.

“You mentioned that 15 Risso’s dolphins died, because they had eaten plastic waste. What does a Risso dolphin look like, Ms Tentacles?”

“The Risso’s dolphin is the biggest of all and its length can even reach 3,5 meters. Although its initial colour when born is gray, over the course of its life, it lightens in colour and develops linear scars all over its body. So, Risso’s dolphins stand out among the other dolphins, because their bodies are covered with scratches!

And they are the largest dolphins of the Greek Seas. Their life span exceeds 30 years. Here is a photo of a Risso’s dolphin”, said the teacher and showed the photo to the class.

“Unfortunately, the Risso’s dolphin is considered an endangered species. Dolphins are mostly threatened and put into danger because of human activity. Illegal fishing, hunting for their meat, their illegal use for dolphin shows, the sea pollution, the plastic waste, fish-cultivations and illegal building, interrupt the balance of coastal ecosystems.

Internationally, the dolphin population has decreased significantly”, informed them the teacher.

“I don’t understand why humans, don’t protect their dolphin friends, because you said that dolphins can save human lives. So why don’t humans help them?” asked the golden fish.

“Well, the bad news is that climate change, plastic pollution and chemical water contamination threaten all dolphin species as well as all other marine mammals. However, there is a silver lining in every cloud. There are people, who devote their lives to marine life rescue, but sadly they are just not enough, that is why their voices are not always heard and sometimes their actions are disregarded. 

Even though most people only care about profit, there are people and organizations who raise public awareness about dolphin welfare issues and the vital need for efficient marine protection globally. 

These are their human friends who work to promote and preserve the biodiversity of the Aegean Sea for example and who truly provide long-term care to dolphins and other sea creatures such as monk seals and sea turtles in a natural environment”.

“Let’s hope that there will be more people like them but for now there seems to be no end to our suffering”, said the blue fish with disappointment. 

“It’s such a big mess! It’s terrible to live with the fear that each day could be your last”, the turtle added. “Why do humans destroy their seas, the planets’ unique gems?”

“The Aegean Archipelagos would be such a perfect place to live for every marine creature, if it weren’t for pollution”, said the blue fish.

“Can you imagine living in the deep blue, warm waters of the Aegean Sea, splashing on the waves with all this sunshine glimmering in our skin sunbathing on a different Greek island every summer! What a life that would be!” said the blue fish with his eyes closed.

“What a life indeed! To have your home along the endless Greek Aegean coastline is the dream of every fish! That is what paradise must be like!” agreed the golden fish with a big smile.

“Sadly, that’s how humans view those seas as well and every summer millions of people gather there polluting the waters more and more” sighed desperately the blue fish, having forgotten his previous enthusiasm. “If only there were no pollution!” wished the blue fish.

“All seas are filled with plastic. The situation is hopeless”, continued gloomily the golden fish. 

“Well, let’s not give up. Nowadays everybody knows how our planet undergoes constant suffering, so humans can no longer blame their ignorance for their lack of action. The world needs to take initiative immediately, as all creatures are equal members of the chain of life. Every

contribution big or small can make a difference!” stated the teacher.

“I believe that people are stupid, as opposed to dolphins which are so clever! Even I am not that stupid! They just don’t have a plan to prevent us all, including themselves, from disaster,” said the blue fish in a serious tone. “They are so stupid they cannot realize that only if they all join their forces together our big blue planet can be saved!” 

Nobody said a word for a while...

“Life can be very cruel for all of us whose home is the sea, as long as there are people who show no mercy, no compassion for other living creatures. Our dolphin friends need help urgently! We also need help before it is too late!” said loudly the golden fish.

“What’s next? Dolphins’ cousins: the whales? Seals, penguins, sharks will become extinct? I am afraid there will be no marine species left. We are all victims in this ongoing nightmare!” said the turtle in fear. 

Chapter IV

“Oh, my poor children. That is not the point of our lessons and field trips. I don’t want you to grow angry and bitter. Or in fear.” said Ms Tentacles and continued “I was saving this for the end of the year, but I think you need it right now. I want to show you that everything is not that bad.” As the silence and curiosity spread around the classroom Mr Tentacles asked them: “What would you say if I told you there is a place without plastic pollution? Without single-use plastic even.”

“Maybe in movies” said the blue fish in a sarcastic tone, but Ms Tentacles saw the anticipation in the eyes of other students.

“Yes there is”, she continued “A plastic free island of Zlarin in the Adriatic Sea and we are going to visit it.”

As they travelled Ms Tentacles was telling them stories about that island where straws and plastic cups are history, where people don’t buy bottled water, but drink tap water, a place with no plastic bags to end up in the sea and a place where, believe it or not, everybody is working together to build a better place to live in. Swimming and listening to that stories every student got caught up in his own mind imagining that dream place.

Only the turtle was mumbling something. Gold fish asked the turtle: “What are you mumbling about?”, but the turtle didn’t hear her so the goldfish got closer and heard her silent mantra “Please, let it be true! Please, let it be true!”

“It’s time for rest, children”, said Ms Tentacles, “Let’s take a break and have lunch and then we’ll ask for directions. This island looks nice for picnic.”

The turtle went for a peek outside and came back in a hurry and excited: “Oh my God, you won’t believe what I just saw!!! A monk seal sunbathing, with humans not far away!” “We have to warn her!” said everybody unanimously.

“Thank God you got away”, said the gold fish to the monk seal in relief while others continued to check her vital signs.

“What are you talking about, my little friends?” she asked them and while they were explaining how scared they were for her life and wanted to warn her about humans she smiled and said: “Don’t worry, my little friends. Thank you very much for your concern, you have a good heart, I can see, but these humans are our friends.

As they were planning a rescue action monk seal jumped into the water and swam merrily to the rhythm of applause from outside.

They know I like sunbathing, just as they do. They even call me "a sea man", because of that.”

“And where are you up to?” she asked them. “To Zlarin”, the choir replied. “Oh, you are too far north. Come on, I’ll take you there and I’ll be your travel guide” she said.

“Thank you so much”, said Ms Tentacles “Maybe you can tell us something about yourself and your species along the way.”

As they began their journey the Mediterranean monk seal began her story: 

"As you know I’m a Mediterranean monk seal and what you didn’t know is that my species is one of the most endangered mammalian species in the world. We live in Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, but we like the Adratic Sea as well. There is only about 600 of us left and I’m still trying to find others along the Adriatic coast. Our species is currently listed as regionally extinct in the Adriatic Sea, but here I am. Every once in a while some of my relatives appear along the coast but when I arrive they’re gone. Increasing human pressure and deterioration of our habitats has led us to change our social behaviour.

We were once gregarious species forming colonies and now we’re solitary individuals. But I won’t give up, I’ll find my pair. Did you know that the first scientific description of our species is based on my great great great grandmother in 1777 near the island of Cres?”

“Wooooow! Really?” asked the gold fish. “Yes, really”, monk seal replied and added: “Oh, look! We’re here!” 

As they started their journey back home the reality hit them. They stumbled upon a great pile of plastic.

“I can’t take it any more! I'm leaving!”, said the blue fish.

 “And where would you go?” turtle asked. 

“Don’t you think for a moment that life of species in rivers is  easier or better than what we have to go through in the undersea world.

ISN'T THAT GREAT?

They stayed for a while enjoying and exploring this plastic free oasis.

I’ve heard that life is tough and scary in rivers too. If you don’t believe me, ask Ms Tentacles and she will tell us all about it. Ms Tentacles knows everything!” said the turtle in a dramatic tone.

“Is that true Ms Tentacles?” The rest of the class asked in agony.

“Well, my dear students...

Chapter V

... I’ll tell you a story of the time long long long ago. When I was a child I went out with my two friends.“ They went on a trip. Her friends were a red seahorse and a colourful lanternfish.

„You know what? “, said the seahorse. „No, what is it? “, answered the lanternfish.

"Lets have some fun outside and see some new things", said the seahorse in an excited voice, but the lanternfish just answered „No, I don’t really feel like going outside“, and swam away. However, the seahorse didn’t give up, it swam towards the lanternfish while it screamed, “Don't let me just sit here like this!”, “It’ll be fun”, said the seahorse in a kind of sweet voice, “pleeease”.

The lanternfish said that he didn’t sleep well this night and that he wanted to sleep. The seahorse clearly didn’t give up and said “If you come with me I make your breakfast for the next week.”

In the sea horses eyes you could directly see the regret of saying that, but the lanternfish just said “Deal, where are we going?”, and swam away.

The seahorse swam towards him and just said, “that’s a surprise”, and so they swam.

“Ms Tentacles? I think we took the wrong way”, said the blue fish. “We´re not in the sea anymore, everything is so different and it`s warmer here than in the sea“, added the turtle.

“That’s right, we must have been caught in a small river.” said Ms Tentacles. “It`s funny here, I’ve never been in a river before.” said the blue fish.

It was more exhausting because you had to fight

the current!!

As I was swimming through the river, I noticed that the water was different from ours. The taste of the water was really strange... It wasn´t salty, but sweet. Then I realized that the sea is really different from the river, said Ms Tentacles.

„Wow, how strange this is. We are swimming between two shores and not only in front of one like in the ocean.”, bubbled the seahorse. It was bizarre, spooky and so fascinating!

“Nice! I am so excited and although the water is dirty I want to see everything!!” exclaimed the lanternfish.

He swam towards a colorful school of fish on the river bank and shouted: "Hello we are from the sea and want to look around here!"

But suddenly he noticed: “Oh no! I think I made a huge mistake!” When he looked around, all he could see were plastic bags that people had thrown into the river. He got tangled up in the plastic and only with great difficulty he could free himself.

He tried to get out of the fishnet, but he just got

more into the fishnet.

His friends, a crab and a dolphin, came along and they asked: "Are you ok?" The Seahorse answered: "No, could you please help me. I'm stuck in this fishnet." "Oh, yes sure." Now the crab cut the ropes and the dolphin tried to pull the net off his body. After 20 minutes of hard work they finally got it. They all were happy and slapped hands each other. Ms. Tentacles did not have to persuade her friends to turn around because her eyes had been itching

for a long time and the three were happy when they reached the sea again.

The students had been listening attentively and a student asked Ms. Tentacles:”I bet your eyes had been itching because of all the the microplastics in the river, hadn`t they!?”

Ms Tentacles smiled friendly and said "You listened very well, but it probably was the freshwater which I couldn't take."

´But the danger of microplastics is that you can´t smell it, you can´'t taste it and often you can´t see it...`", declared Ms Tentacles thoughtfully...

   – After all, human beings have been destroying our home, and even though there are some humans that are trying to pollute less, we are still suffering a lot because of this huge pollution, that ruins life in all oceans and rivers – said Mrs Tentacles.

  – Why don´t they try to use less plastic? Our lives are permanently in risk because of all the plastics and microplastics that fill the marine ecosystems – asked the blue fish.

  – That is very true! – agreed Mrs Tentacles – There’s even a plastic island in the Pacific Ocean! Everyday, tons of plastic and all kinds of garbage are dropped in seas and rivers, and things are getting darker.
