ARRG mates. We are on a hunt to find some organic compounds.
Why you ask? Because they are worth their weight in gold as
far as our body needing them. We will be looking for carbohydrates,
lipids, and proteins!

The Carbohydrates are found in the plant
life in this area.They contain the elements
carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and they are
in a ratio of 1:2:1. ARG!

Carbohydrates are just like the energy in that volcano! The
volcano will not last for very long before it blows. Once it blows
all of the energy is gone. Carbs function the same way. You eat
them and the energy is immediate! It is a short term energy supply
so we need to find all available carbs and fast! ARG!

We will be searching for two different types of carbs. We
will begin looking for sugar, nectar of the gods. When sugar is
heated with Benedicts solution it will turn bright red! You
cannot miss it. When we are looking for starches we will use
iodine. It will turn purple. A sign of WEALTH!

For you maties back on the ship, I want you searching for protein.
A good source of protein is fish. Just like these I had the deckhand to
catch this morning. The protein in these fish contain carbon, hydrogen,
oxygen, but also something special, NITROGEN and SULFUR
ARGGG!! They are not found in the other compounds! So proteins
are special.

Proteins give you enzymes which speed up

reactions. They kick things into gear. Just like

these cannons get stuff done!

How will I know it is
a protein? If I use biuret, it
will turn a beautiful shade
of purple. Yea, I said beautiful!
Arrg!

The last organic compound
we will need to look for is lipids.
Lipids contain carbon, hydrogen
and oxygen in a 1:2 ratio.

Temple of LipidsAt the Temple of Lipids I will find this long
term energy supply. You will now have energy
during the winter months. It is a powerful
energy supply we cannot live without. Arg!

Temple of LipidsOnce we find the lipids at the temple, we can use
brown paper to see if it has the magical power of
causing the paper to become transparent, translucent
or lets the light shine through.
