The Austrians built Karlovac from scratch in 1579 in order to strengthen their southern defences against Ottoman encroachments.
Croatians know Karlovac as grad parkova (the city of parks) and grad na četiri rijeke (the town on four rivers) for its numerous green areas and four rivers, of which Mrežnica, Korana, and Kupa flow through built-up areas, and Dobra is a few kilometers outside the city centre.
Museum of Croatian Independence war. Tanks and loco mobile, howitzers, anti tanks and antiaircraft canons, tackled MIG 21 aircraft, armored transporter… Those are exhibit articles of weapons of Independence war on front line in 1991-1995 in Karlovac district Turanj. The collection is set up on battlefield of the worst fights of Croatia army, which defended Karlovac, by the main road Karlovac -Plitivička jezera.
The Dubovac Castle overlooks the Croatian city Karlovac. Its square tower was probably built during the 13th century. In the 15th century, the castle was rebuilt in Renaissance style. The castle had various owners—from Slavonian nobleman family Sudar to famous Croatian counts and dukes Frankopan and Zrinski. From 1671 until 1809, the Dubovac was owned by the Karlovac generals. In 1837, a new owner, Count Laval Nugent, rebuilt the castle in the spirit of romanticism.
Aquarium presents the flora and fauna of Croatian rivers and lakes, geological history, traditional culture and history of the basin of four Karlovac rivers.
Visitors can witness richness of life in rivers and lakes, and more than one hundred freshwater fish species, of which 40 are endemic.
The first initiatives for the establishment of a museum in Karlovac emerged in the late 19th century, but it was not until December 18, 1904 that the Town Council rendered its opinion on the need to establish a museum and provided the initial funds of 500 crowns.
Karlovac Beer Days is a folk festival that is traditionally held in late summer in the town of Karlovac on a meadow by the river Korana. It was first held in 1984 and only during the war in 1991 was it not held.
Beer days are attended by an average of about 200,000 people. The general sponsor of the event is Karlovačka pivovara.
The idea of a star-shaped ideal city had existed for more than a century before the construction of Karlovac, first in treatises on architecture, then in the regulation and remodeling of existing cities.The six-pointed star has a bastion system derived from the inner polygon, with a radius of 120 Viennese fathoms, and an orthogonal street grid.
