This book is dedicated to those with adventurous spirits; to those who are innovative and hardworking; to those unafraid to try new things; to those who enjoy life's pleasures.

Laura Ingalls Wilder is one of the most recognizable names in America, even to this day. She was a wife, mother, hardworking farmer, and imaginative writer. She created a historical fiction series based off of her childhood spent on the farm. She gives us a peek into that period in time while inspiring us to never give up, make the most of our situations, and enjoy life!
It was February 7, 1867, a cold winter's day, when Laura Elizabeth Ingalls was born.
Her parents, Charles and Caroline, were thrilled to welcome her into the world. So was her older sister, Mary. The four of them lived in a small cabin near Pepin, Wisconsin.

Laura's parents were hardworking farmers and pioneers. In 1869, before her second birthday, Laura and her family moved to the Osage Indian Reserve in Kansas.
Over the next ten years, Laura's family moved around and spent time in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, Pepin, Wisconsin, and Burr Oak, Iowa.

Finally, in 1879, Laura's family settled in DeSmet, South Dakota.
By this time, the Ingalls family had grown. She now had two younger sisters, Carrie and Grace. Sadly, her brother, Freddie, died when he was a young baby.

Laura had an active and adventurous childhood. She moved around the country and got to see all kinds of places. She stayed busy helping her family with chores on the farm and in the home. Plus, with three sisters, she always had somebody to play with!

Laura and the Ingalls family celebrated many good times, but they also had their fair share of trials. Shortly before arriving in South Dakota, Laura's older sister went blind. Laura spent much of her time helping take care of her sister.
One winter, the town ran out of food to eat and wood for making fires. The family and town had to come together to help each other make it through. These experiences shaped Laura and her future.

Laura's parents always did their best to make sure their daughters attended church and school.
Laura was an excellent student who loved learning. In fact, she loved it so much that she became a teacher. In 1882, when she was only 15, she earned her first teaching job.

During her early teaching years, she began a friendship with a young man named Almanzo Wilder. He used to give her a ride to work every week in his buggy.
After spending lots of time together and falling in love, the two of them got married in August 25, 1885.

The very next year, in 1886, Laura and Almanzo happily welcomed a baby girl into the world. They named her Rose.
Over the next few of years, the family of three experienced a lot of hardship. They lost many crops, Almanzo was very ill and became paralyzed, they lost their home in a fire, and Laura gave birth to a baby boy who unfortunately didn't survive.

These years were very hard for the Wilder family. Through all of it, though, they stuck together and became a stronger family.
They moved around to Minnesota and Florida, but settled back in DeSmet, South Dakota, where Almanzo worked as a carpenter and Laura a dressmaker.
