Ancient Roman Houses & Families

Houses and families were important back in ancient Rome because it was 

how they lived. There were about 4 kinds of homes back then during early 

Rome. They were domus, villas, house in the city, and Apartments were the 

poor people in the social classes lived. In the wealthy houses they would host 

feasts and play music, sing, and dance. The main purpose of houses and was 

to live in a house with     shelter and a nice area for rest. The main purpose of 

a family was to love and support a family. A family had 3 generations living 

in a house at a time. A family consisted of a paterfamilias a person who was 

the head of the family. The paterfamilias was the father, the grandfather, or 

the great-grandfather. Then there were men, women, children, servants and 

slaves. As you can see, Ancient Roman families and Houses made a huge 

impact on not only life today but life in Ancient Rome.
