Earth Movements

           Rotation is the spinning of the Earth on 

its axis

           Revolution is the orbit of the Earth 

around the sun

           The Earth's axis is the imaginary 

pole going through the Earth from North to 

South at a 23.5 degree angle

Moon Characteristics

            The surface of the moon is divided 

into   mountains, highlands, and the 

roughly circular plains called 

maria.(believed as a body of water) It is 

covered with a thin layer of powdered 

rock. There is also, crater almost on the 

maria.

Phases of the Moon

We see phases of the moon because the 

moon orbits around the Earth and it 

reflects sunlight. There are eight phases 

of the moon. The phase (in order) are new 

moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, 

waxing gibbous, full moon, waning 

gibbous, last quarter, and waning 

crescent.

Eclipses

             A Solar Eclipse is when the moon gets 

in front of the earth and blocks most of the sun 

rays. Occurs 2-4 times a year. It is dangerous 

to look at directly.Only occurs in the daytime.

           A Lunar Eclipse is when earth is 

between moon and sun. It isn't as rare as a 

solar eclipse. Happens only at night and it isn't 

dangerous to look at. The moon has a reddish 

color.

Mercury

~it is Rocky and has lots of craters

~is the second smallest planet

~Has no atmosphere and moons

~A day is 59 days

~A year is 88 days

Venus

~It is the hottest planet

~has clouds of sulfuric acid

~Rocky, Volcanoes, and Mountains

~Thick atmosphere that traps CO2 

making intense heat

~A day is 243 days

~A year is 225 days

~Also has no moons 

Earth

~ Has one moon

~ Is the only planet with life, water, 

and air to breathe

~ A day is 24 hours

~ A year is 365 days 

Mars

~ Is known as the Red Planet due to 

iron oxide in rocks/dirt

~ It is the closest planet to Earth and 

is the most studied planet

~ Polar ice caps of frozen CO2

~ Has 2 small moons 

~ A day is 24 hours

~ A year is 687 days

Jupiter

~ Largest planet

~made of gases hydrogen and helium

~ Red Spot is a huge storm (larger 

than Earth)

~has many moons 47+

~ A day is 10 hours

~ A year is 12 years
