What is Radiation Therapy?
First, let’s learn about cancer!
We are made up of many tiny cells that we cannot see. Sometimes these good cells turn bad and start to hurt your other good cells, which causes cancer. These bad cells form a tumor that you may or may not be able to see. Cancer is not contagious. This means you cannot get cancer from another person.
If you have cancer you might be treated with radiation therapy. This is a cancer treatment that removes the bad cancer cells with rays of invisible energy using a special machine called a linear accelerator. These rays do not hurt; in fact, you will not feel the treatment at all!

Alignment Appointment
Before you start treatment, you will have an alignment appointment that gets you and the radiation machine ready for your treatment. On this day, radiation therapists will use your plan from your radiation oncologist to set the machine in the right position to target the cancer cells. First, you will have a CT scan that will show the radiation therapists what position your body is in. Then, with a marker, they will place dots on your body where the machine has to line up. Later, you might get a little tattoo on top of these dots.
Alignment Appointment
You will get a body mold that holds you in place on the table. It feels like a beanbag that is in the shape of your body. If your cancer is in your head, neck or chest you will get a radiation mask made. Your radiation therapist will put a thin piece of webbed plastic in a special oven or warm water that makes it soft and squishy. Then, they will put it over your face, neck, and/ or chest and rub a cool towel over it to make it hard. You can breathe through the radiation mask and it feels like a warm, wet washcloth on your face. After your mask hardens, sometimes, you can get it painted in any color or as any character you want! Your body mold and radiation mask (if you have one) will stay at the treatment center.

Inpatient Experience
If you are staying in the hospital while receiving treatment then you are called an inpatient.
Here is how a day of treatment may look if you are an inpatient:
First, a nurse, Child Life Specialist, or another adult will take you in a wheelchair or a gurney from your room to a processing room where a nurse will take your vitals and flush your PICC line, if you have one.
Inpatient Experience
If you have trouble lying still during your treatment, the anesthesiologist will give you some medicine to make you comfortable and help you go to sleep until treatment is over. Your parents may stay with you until you fall asleep.
If you do not need to go to sleep during therapy, you will be taken in a wheelchair or gurney to the radiation room. The radiation therapists will help you on the table with your body mold and if you need one, put on your radiation mask. Your parents may stay with you until it is time to start giving you radiation.

Outpatient Experience
If you are not staying in the hospital while receiving radiation therapy, you are an outpatient.
You will come to the hospital or treatment center and sit in the waiting room until it is time for your appointment.
When it is time for your appointment, you will go to a locker room where you will change into a hospital gown. Then you will walk to the radiation room and get ready for treatment. If you are getting “sleepy medicine,” it will be given to you before treatment starts.
After your treatment, you can go home and you will come back every weekday until your treatment is over.
Experiencia Ambulatoria
