The internet is a very useful tool we use most of the time nowadays, however its origin and history are often overlooked. It’s impossible to credit the invention of this to a single person, the first ideas of it’s possible existence were toyed by Nikola Tesla in the 1900’s, who stated the idea of “world wireless system”, this was later taken upon by visionary thinkers such as Paul Otlet and Vannevar Bush and conceived the ideas of mechanized storage systems of books and media in the 1930’s and 40’s.

However it wasn’t until the 1960’s when the first schematic concepts came up, this is credited to J.C.R Licklider who popularized the idea and Leonard Kleinrock, who in 1961 wrote about ARPANET, the predecessor of the internet. Kleinrock with many other scientists developed the backbone of emails, media, facebook posting, tweets and many more. After this computer scientists developed “packet switching” which was an effective way of moving data that would later become one of the major blocks of the internet, this concept later on allowed computers to communicate on a single network.

In 1969 was delivered the first ever message between two computers, one located in UCLA and the other located in Stanford. The message “LOGIN” ‘s first two letters were received in the computer the size of a small house in Stanford and it crashed the ARPANET system.

Technology continued to grow in the 70’s after scientists Robert Khan and Vinton Cerf developed the Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), a communication model that shows how data can be transferred between multiple networks. This was adapted by ARPANET in 1983 which allowed researchers to begin to assemble the “network of networks” that became the modern day internet.

Finally in the 1990’s the online world took a more recognizable form and Tim Berners-Lee invented the “World Wide Web” which is the most common way to access data online through websites and hyperlinks. The web helped popularize the internet and nowadays it's gone through many changes that allow us to have information about various topics one google research away.
